Howdy folks! Hope you're enjoying this glorious onset of summer.

We wanted to let you know about an exciting upcoming show and our last performance until October. On Friday, July 6, Janam will be sharing an evening of Music at the Crossroads with Milla Milojkovic, who beautifully synthesizes jazz and Balkan music, and the eclectic tamburica band Sidro, playing soulful & highly danceable songs from the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. Janam will top off the evening with our lively mix of Balkan, Sephardic and Appalachian tunes for listening and dancing.

We're super excited to be joined for this show by special guest Greg Jenkins on clarinet and vocals and we hope to see you there!

Milla Milojkovic: Born to a Croatian mother who grew up in Bosnia, and a Serbian father, folk music and culture was a prominent feature of her youth.  Milla has worked and recorded with artists such as Larry Vuckovich, Adam Shulman, Noel Jewkes, John Wiitala, and Dayna Stephens.  Milla enjoys the creative freedoms of jazz, and believes that there is a true synthesis between jazz and Balkan music, for both genres welcome improvisation and require chops.

Sidro: Performing on traditional tamburitza instruments,
this California based group presents a wide spectrum of musical influence, including
folk, pop, rock, country and gypsy music, sung in the romantic Croatian dialect
of the Dalmatian coast. The band's name means "Anchor" and symbolizes their affinity to the Adriatic sea and the cultural connection that music provides to them.

Janam (My Soul) creates a lush, soulful & original Balkan, Turkish & Appalachian mix, uniting some of the Bay Area's most imaginative and devoted interpreters of these traditional styles. Janam is Juliana Graffagna ~ voice, percussion; Dan Auvil ~ percussion, voice; Tom Farris ~ laouto, guitar, accordion; Gari Hegedus ~ violin, oud, saz, mandocello; and Peter Jaques ~ clarinet, ney, voice.

“An innovative ensemble that explores a dizzying range of styles, from Appalachia and Asia Minor to Eastern Europe. The quintet plays swirling, hard-driving music that always seems to end up in unexpected places.” SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

“They’re a band to watch, with some sterling musicianship and a real sense of fervor about them.” SING OUT!
