I support making the hostel group open. We can make this a platform to discuss issues regarding hostel rather than a group for lost and found mails.

The hostel group is open in many hostels I know of. The group serves its complete purpose only if all the people have equal say and can post their queries and problems regarding  hostel.

I think making the hostel group open will result in unnecessary discussions and many people may consider it spam and might want to opt out of the group. As we can see in the hostels where the group is open, there is lot of chaos in the group. Any complaints can be emailed to the respective secretary personally and if that secretary doesn't respond well enough, then, we may consider of opening the group. But, i feel such cases are very rare.

The only reason why the previous council(s) decided not to open the group for discussions is because all wing related problems float up to the entire hostel. As such there is no need for the tenth wing people to know what problems the 12th wing is facing. But, most of the students take this as a platform to vent their frustration out on the council regarding a problem that concern him at all.

I know that there are hostels with groups open for discussion. But if you read a mail with more than 45-50 messages in thread, you will find that a good chunk of those messages are just innovative ways to troll a secretary or the entire council.

My suggestion is:
1. Open the group for discussions related to the entire hostel. (e.g. Security issues, LAN issues, Tech Soc and Lit Soc positions, etc.)
2. If there are any wing related problems, please mail it to that particular secretary and not the hostel. (e.g. Washrooms are not clean, washing machine(s) in first floor are not working, etc.).
3. If it is not a hostel related issue, the admin of the group will mail you asking you to contact a particular secretary and the mail will be deleted from the group.
4. Trolling the council or using abusive language will lead to deletion of that particular email id from the group.

If these points can be implemented strictly, only then we can have discussions and not arguments regarding any problem. If the group is active, then we can have meaningful discussion about agenda points to be raised in SAC or/and we can propose agenda points for the upcoming SAC meetings.

I believe it is high time we open it up. The people who do not want to involve in any particular discussion can easily ignore that complete thread. Also, an open forum will allow residents to express their views and concerns more effectively and I have also seen open forums promoting hostel spirit in other hostels.
