Dear Students,

It is mandatory that all students should have their ID cards (get an immediate replacement if misplaced), and any friends visiting you/your room should make an entry in the visitors’ registry at security desk.

Please refer to the Rules and Regulations for Hostel Residents @

https://ccw.iitm.ac.in/sites/default/files/Circulars/Rules%20and%20Regulations%20for%20Hostel%20Residents.pdf

There has been repeated violation in the hostel with the usage of electrical appliance. Students who possess electrical appliance will be levied penalty of minimum Rs. 1000 per item for the first time & the electrical appliance will be confiscated. Second time violation will incur penalty as decided by the intra HDC.

In the interest of safety & security of all residents, periodic checks will be conducted by the vigilance team & hostel office staff, and they have the right to search any room.

Kind regards,

Dear General Secretary,

Please provide the list of items that are prohibited and with specifications.

Example, many people have table-fans because they cant tolerate Chennai's hot climate. So it is essential to know that either all table-fans are prohibited or table-fans which exceed certain wattage are prohibited.

Similarly, almost all residents have trimmers and it is most essential appliance for men. So just by stating ' Students who possess electrical appliance will be levied penalty ' creates an ambiguity.

Secondly, make sure the people from vigilance respectfully enter the rooms of students. Students are not jail-mates. They have paid a rent of 5000 per sem to institute as a part of fees and they have all the human rights which a tenant should have. So a low sound knock rather than rattling the door is expected from vigilance people. Also only single person should enter the room. We know that they have right to enter but they can't storm inside as we open the doors.

Third, is that vigilance people have no right to take our photos without our permission. Last time my experience was horrible. They took photos of me without asking me and didn't even say 'smile please'.

Please convey my email to the warden also.

Regards,

I totally agree with Shivam. They can carry out security checks inside the rooms, when required, but no way they can treat any student like a criminal. I have used the last word of the previous sentence very carefully. We are all students of IITM and a certain level of decency and protocol is expected from IITM administration whenever it comes to official proceedings.

They just cannot barge into someone's room and act as if they own it. Officials may enter the room after providing proper information and producing their Identity Cards and we won't be interfering in their proceedings.

I am concerned here because something unacceptable (as mentioned above) did happen to my friend. And yes, they have no RIGHT to click our photos without our consent! If they ever wish, we are bound to produce our ID cards and they can definitely record our roll or room number.

Thanks for reading!

Kindly have a meeting and decide on what is acceptable to keep as electrical appliances by consulting students (not just secs) and clearly frame rules. We have our own proper reasons for using these appliances. Just marking all electrical appliances as prohibited is not right. Everytime someone comes and takes photos, it's very irritating.

I agree with Shivam too, it is difficult to survive in the climatic conditions out here. A table fan is more of a necessity and a seemingly humane option in a place where the seasons can broadly be classified as hot, hotter, hottest.
Students in the past might've had the same rules imposed onto them but that doesn't mean we can't question the rationale behind them. I think it's time we meet together to identify such rule changes that will actually be beneficial to the student body and make a collaborative effort along with students across hostels to make the necessary amendments to the existing rules.
