Thanks, I bought that and returned it a few years ago. It looks like DrumJam is probably my best bet, contingent on figuring out the midi setup that has eluded me so far. Will be nice when he makes the AU version.

This is quite versatile multi-instrument / sampler that pretty much covers the gamut as far as Indian / Sub continental instruments go. It has a whopping 74 instruments including melodic, percussive and drone instruments. The price is a bit steep, but if you plan on using such sounds, it is worth it.

The download is a meager 174 MB and the installation was quite easy. The instrument was detected by the DAW (Reaper in this place) and ran quite smoothly and without a single crash or bug for the duration of my testing. It does not use any known player, but has its own and well functioning player.

There are a substantial number of MIDI melodic lines and grooves provided to give you an idea, with the Indian naming featured, so it is good for learning as well as using. The loops are easily dragged and dropped into the main DAW for tweaking as per your requirement.

My single beef with SwarPlug is the lack of depth in sampling (single layers, no round robins) and the resulting artificial sounding performance of some of the instruments. If you are familiar with Indian Classical music, you just may slit your wrists after hearing the sarangi and the sarod. I expected more for the price in this regard.

So all in all, its a good product, but a new version with proper muti-sampling and better performance scripting for instruments like Sarangi would be much appreciated. The world needs more of these, instead of the yawn-inducing plethora of western instruments.

If you have any questions about our company, our products or our processes, please have a look at the questions & answers below, in case we have addressed them. If we didn't feel free to email us to sup...@swarsystems.com or to open a conversation using the chat widget below.

All 3 actually. The mother company is called Swar Systems, but we carry products that are for very different audiences. So we decided to create 2 separate brands: Swar VST for Composer tools and Swar Classical for Indian classical music products.

These are products for composers and DJs to add Indian sounds in their music. We have a virtual Indian instrument SwarPlug that features over 100 perfectly sampled Indian instruments. Also another plugin, SwarGroove that lets you create or customize over 200 rhythmic styles from all over India. And finally a complete, affordable DAW, Swar Studio that is an excellent choice if you want to create Indian fusion music but have a small budget. Find out more about these products by clicking on each of them.

If you love Indian classical music, then those are for you. We have a complete Indian music software called SwarShala that features multimedia tutorials on both North (Hindusthani) and South (Carnatic) Indian classical music, a Practice pane to practice along virtual musicians, and a Compose pane where you can create not only individual melodies and rhythms, but also complete multi-track songs with over 100 Indian instruments. We also have a mobile version of the Practice pane called iShala that provides full accompaniment for your riyaaz wherever you want to practice. Find out more about these products by clicking on each of them.

The products are different, some with a choice of instruments sets. Exact price for each is shown in our online shop. Just select the product you're interested in and you'll see the price for each variety of it. For Swar Classical products the online shop is here

All our desktop software are compatible with Windows 10 or higher (64 bits), as well as with Mac OSX 10.9 or higher. On the mobile apps front, iShala runs on Android 6 and higher, as well as iOS 9.3 and higher. Tanpura Droid runs on Android 6 and higher.

Immediately. Upon payment of the order, you'll always automatically receive emailed download instructions for the software you purchased. If you ask for a shipped package in the Shipping options, we'll still send the download instructions but we'll also ship your boxed package. Deliveries in India are couriered from Delhi (2 days max). For the rest of the world we ship from Switzerland. Count 2-3 working days in Europe and 5-7 abroad.

Just note that a shipped package won't have any additional content than the download version and may incur some sales tax/VAT upon reception, sometimes as high as 20%. So we recommend going for the cheaper, download option when possible.

If you have paid through our secured payment system (Razorpay for INR, SIX Multipay for USD), you should be receiving download instructions and Serial Numbers (when applicable) emails automatically. If you don't, then they might be stuck in the Spam or Promotions folder of your mail account. Please check.

If you have paid by other means, we'll be sending these emails manually, so please allow up to 10 hours delay (usually 1-2 hours max).

On the latest Windows or Mac OS X platforms you may get a security warning when running the installer. This is to protect your system again viruses and such. In this case, you can ignore the message because our installers have been properly tested against viruses and also certified with a valid signature.

Each DAW (sequencer) has a specific way of loading third-party plugins. Check out our Videos section for an explanation on how to load on some of the main DAWs. If that doesn't help, feel free to email us at sup...@swarsystems.com.

Swar Studio: Unlocking is done by entering a valid Product Key in the About box of the software/plugin. You should be receiving a personalized Product Key by email. Once you have that, open the software/plugin, open its About box and there you will see a field to enter it.Other products: the software is activated within the Swar Dashboard utility that is launched at the end of the installer, or which you can also run from Applications (Mac) or Programs (Windows) folders. Enter the Serial nr received, click on Activate and you should be ready to go (Internet connection required).

Product Keys are personalized. To get one for your software you can go to the Updates page and select the update for the product you want. You'll then receive 2 emails: one with the update download instructions (which you can ignore if you already use the latest version) and a second with the corresponding Product Key/Serial Nr.

For that you need to go to our Updates section. Check the version of the update against the one you have in the About box of the software. Or you can run the Swar Dashboard and it should allow you to directly install any pending update for SwarPlug, SwarGroove and SwarShala.

In order to download an update you must be registered with us for that product. Just email us with the details of the product(s) you purchased, the vendor, the date of purchase and your address. We'll register you quickly so you can download any future update without any problem.

Chances are you didn't have a full, running product on your system before you installed the update. Updates do not contain all the files required for a product, only the ones that have changed, so installing only the update will lead to crashes. Email us to sup...@swarsystems.com for instructions to a full reinstallation.

I would like to offer a demo version for my next plugin, with sporadic noise or silence (eg 5 sec every minute or so).
The question is how to do such a thing without having something too easy to hack like a counter and an if statement in the process block.
Any idea or experience you could share on the matter would be much welcome

I should have specified that the demo version would be a separate build. The idea is to have something that cannot be so easily (if at all) turned into the normal version, by entirely removing important parts (eg set/get state, or some functionalities), printing an explicit (and obfuscated) demo message on the UI, and inserting silences (or noise).

Thank you for all your responses. Once again let me stress the fact that I am aware of the pros and cons of the different strategies (and yes, I have read all the related topics on this forum as well as KVR).

I decided on a strategy when I released my last plugin two years ago, with an approach that I think is reasonable, user-friendly, and compatible with my situation and ideology. I want to stick with it as it has proven good enough for me and my users.

Now I want to offer a demo version for my new plugin, and my question is code-related:
I want to implement a simple periodic silence in that demo build, and would be delighted if members would be willing to share tips and ideas on how to do it a way that would be obfuscated enough to deter unseasoned hackers.

When the file is not present, create it and store the current timestamp. Bonus points if you encrypt it e.g. using Blowfish (symmetric is enough, since the key can be found in the binary anyway). Even rot13 or XOR would be good enough.

I would also add a marketing screen, i.e. when the file to start the demo is created I would also set a flag so the next time the user opens the GUI they are presented with a marketing screen "If you like the plugin buy it at yada-yada.com", which also returns when the demo period is expired.

Make it very obvious what is happening. Using noise or silence would make the plugin appear broken, so most users will delete it and not bother again.
Instead I would use a real sample, e.g. record a tuning fork or anything that shows it is there intentionally.
