Wednesday night at the Family History Center where I work, I couldn't
get the software to work with the project I have been working on so I
decided to work on the question of who Walter P Fitton was, and I
found quite a bit.
First, I found him listed on the 1900 Census with his father John
(3_1_6+), aunt/step-mother Caroline (3_1_3), and brother Erwin or
Irwin (3_1_6_1). Apparently, John Fitton had returned to his family
after the letter written by James Hacking (3_1) dated 16 December
1897, where he said, "the two Boys on the right with the Dog his our
Daughter Jenney that Died and Left them two boys and Caroline Married
there Father and Fower years last month he Deserted them and we have
not seen him since; Irwen and Walter and Dog Rover... "
I found several more census and military records (WWI Draft Cards) to
fill in vital statistics and family members. So far, this is the
information I know about the family:
John P. Fitton born Aug 1857 in England to Thomas and Anna Fitton. He
married Mary Jeanette Hacking (3_1_6) sometime after the 1880 census
and they had two sons: Irwin Roscoe Fitton (3_1_6_1) born 25 January
1883 in Missouri; and Walter Pierce Fitton (3_1_6_2) born 24 June 1885
in Massachusetts. Mary Jeanette Hacking Fitton died the following year
after Walter was born on 6 October 1886. About 1890, John married his
sister-in-law, Catharine Caroline Hacking (3_1_3). November 1893 John
disappeared, but returned to his family before the 1900 census
(enumberated 16 June 1900) in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts. John,
Catharine, and Walter are also together for the 1910 census; and John
P. and Caroline C. together in Warren, Bristol, Rhode Island in the
1920 census. Both Irwin Roscoe and Walter Pierce Fitton have WWI Draft
cards in 1918. Walter P is married to Laura A. between 1910 and 1913,
when their daughter Gertrude M. Fitton (3_1_6_2_1) is born. Their son
Walter J Fitton (3_1_6_2_2) was born on 30 June 1918 in Massachusetts.
The family is together for the 1920 census, but Laura has remarried
Anthony T. Freitas by the time of the 1930 census, with her two
children listed as stepchildren. I am not sure if Walter P. had died
or they had divorced because I can find no more record of him at this
point. Walter J Fitton died 16 October 1998 in Middleborough,
Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA.
Not bad for a couple of hours searching on the Internet, ayh?
