Fellow LASMs, I know that I packed a fair quantity of extra thick trash bags for just the reasons noted below.  Did you?

Do we need to plan to purchase more as outlined below?

Please let me know your thoughts ASAP so we can respond to Randy.

Thanks

Brad

Brad,

Based on information received from Jim Blair this morning, it is being recommended that each scout has three 55 gallon trash bags with them.  One as a liner for their duffel upon arrival at the Summit and 2 for the return trip.

I believe that the LASMs have all packed trash bags for the return trip.  So I think you guys have at least the return trip covered.

So we may need a 55 gallon bag for each participant to maybe wrap the large duffel in for moving from the bus to their campsite.

We have an opportunity to order 55 gallon bags at Wal-mart for pickup on July 14th.  Should we order bags from Wal-mart?  If so, how many per scout and what size and thickness.  The 2 mils bags are nearly a $1 apiece.

Note that we already planned to have a box of trash bags in the Wal-mart order so that we could collect breakfast trash.  But these wouldn’t be 55 gallon bags and we weren’t ordering 1 per participant.

Let me know what you think?

Thanks.

-Randy

Might be a good idea to procure some.  It is a lot of trash bags, and Scouts can easily pack 3 in their travel duffels.

John Manz comments below reinforce the conditions of a potentially wet Jamboree.  Please bring the 3 – 55 gal. plastic bags he recommends for each member.  The emphasis on rain gear and quality shoes/boots/socks can’t be strong enough.  These rains will likely follow us to the tour locations of NYC, PH and WDC as well.

All the other items we have discussed, including the check-in process and paper copies of all medical forms.

Only 6 days to launch!

Subject: Jamboree Information
Importance: High

Fellow Subcamp Blue Jay Scouters:

Some heads up items:

1.      It is projected to rain on 8 of the 10 Jamboree days (most may have thunderstorms as well as showers), including arrival and departure days and all of the staff days.

2.      The duffel bags are not waterproof:

a.       I have double coated mine with the heavy-duty CampDrY from Kiwi - the 3rd coat goes on tomorrow.  This will help but not solve the problem completely or reliably due to seams and zippers.

b.      I suggest each of you have 3 of the 55 gallon heavy duty (3 mil thickness) extra large (3' wide x 4'8" high) contractor size plastic bags in their gear - can buy at any good hardware store, Home Depot, or Lowes.  Iron Hold is one of the brands.  I will have some extras in my Avalanche in dead storage.

c.       Use one (1) of the bags as an inner liner for the duffel bag, the same way we use a plastic bag in a pack basket, before departing the final tour stop enroute to the Jamboree.   The other 2 bags are to put bedding, etc. in before leaving camp in the morning or to keep the gear dry as an inner liner when departing the Jamboree.

3.      If it is raining on arrival at the Subcamp, I suggest you get out of uniforms and into other clothes as soon as you arrive at the campsite as it will be wet and soft.  keep the uniforms looking good.

4.      Drying will be far more difficult at the Summit than at Ft. Hill due to paucity of dryers in town and any reasonable way to get to them - bring a line to string for drying when the sun comes out.

5.      Solar chargers may be of limited use if the sky is totally overcast much of the time.

6.      This could be another wet one - ala the 1973 Jamboree at Moraine State Park, PA just 270 miles almost due north of the Summit.  The Scouts have always called it "Mo' Rain State Park" as it was a cold rain for ten (10) straight days..

7.      Be alert for hypothermia especially if we get a sudden temperature drop after a rain or thunderstorm.  Most hypothermia occurs when wet beteen 30o F and 50o F.

8.      Trenchfoot and other foot ailments could become an issue, especially for those wearing Gore=Tex lined boots.  10 days in a "sauna" is a breeding ground.  Foot checks for this and other ailments like blisters are a best practice

·         I am now going to bring as an extra my pair of moccasins that are the L.L.Bean rubber bottoms - they do stay dry but are not great for walking cross-country.

In answer to a question:

1.      I do not have a phone number yet for the Subcamp HQ.  Subcamp Director Mike Hale is working on that.

Be sure that you have copies of all the medical forms and all the adult required certifications with you in a folder (folder is registrations request to make it easy for them to file).  There has been a flurry of notifications in the last 3 days of missing/incomplete information on submitted medicals that the Scouters thought were complete and appear to be so.

Be sure you have checked in on the dashbioard with TMS, registering your arrival and departure information.  This is mandatory even if arriving by POV.

I will go off e-mail at 1500 (3:00 p.m.) Saturday 6 July as I start the long drive with 3 of my Commissioner Team at 0300 7 July from Montana to Centerville, UT to the Summit.  My cell phone will be active at all times - I can also receive text messages but not e-mails.  My check-in at the Summit is 10 July - if you want a personal update on the weather or anything else after I arrive just give me a call and we can talk.

Looking forward to the adventure.

My best,

John

3 bags per person is probably a good idea with the predicted rain. It appears that the cost of the bags will be significant. Will council reimburse the LASM's?

Randy -

I do not know what the right answer is here but want to chew on a few ideas

I agree we will need something to protect our gear from the rain and mud. I am not sure however the recommendation of providing 3, 55 Gallon 3 mill contractor bags for each participant is the right way to go.  How will we deploy these bags and when?  The duffels are intended to be packed in using the shoulder straps so would  we use a 55 gallon bag as a poncho to go over the boy and bag together?  Or cut it up some way to use as a wrap around the bag itself? Remember we will also be carrying our Travel Duffels and Day Packs as well.

Repacking the Jamboree Duffels to put everything in plastic bags and then putting the bags in the duffel is a good idea but the mechanics are a bit daunting.  Would we repack each duffel one by one in the Graebel truck prior to unload or run them in to Wallmart to repack?  This will take a lot of time as well as run the risk of losing gear in the repack process.

Used as a poncho might be the easiest approach. We could pass these out on the bus ride to Jambo and help each kid cut head and arm holes, we would also need scissors.  The scouts could then retain the bags as ponchos for as long as they last or we could make them pack them away for the trip home.  But the 55 gallon bags would be huge on a little kid

As you mentioned I purchased and packed a box of 70 Costco Trash compactor bags.  These are 18 gallon bags at 2 mill thickness and cost me $12.49 or roughly 18 cents each.  This gives me almost 2 bags per participant to pack wet gear in for the return trip.  I have found the 18 gallon bags a great size with not a lot of extra plastic to deal with.  I actually think a lighter bag of 1 mill, packed inside a duffel would be sufficient.  Costco has 20 Gallon Contractor Bags (2mil) available at $0.39 each.   They also have 13 gallon bags at 1mill thickness at much lower prices.

Another approach would be to just buy a big roll of the standard Yard Waste 40 Gallon bags (1.1mill) these will wear out fast but they are versatile and cheap.

Finally I think we should consider just making a recommendation to each Participant / Parent and let them take responsibility for what they provide for weather protection.  We did note in the DAC packing list that each participant should have an assortment of trash and zip-lock bags for dealing with wet gear.  We also recommended a poncho as the appropriate raingear in these circumstances.  And while I recommended packing trash compactor bags to each LASM I do not know if any of the others did so.

Our motto is "Be Prepared" so perhaps we should recommend each scout bring a poncho or Garden waste bag(s) as well as a few 13 gallon trash bags for the trip home.  If each participant brought 4 of those they would have no issues with packing clothes and other items for the trip home.

Just my thoughts as I mull this over.

Brad,

Thank you for your analysis.  I agree that we should be prepared and have a stock of bags for troop use.  However,  I think each participant should be responsible for understanding the potential rain and bringing appropriate rain gear and covering.  I think we live in a dry climate and it is hard for us to imagine what it will be like to arrive in a downpour and then days of rain.  I think I will send an emphatic email to our troop with fair warning and let the scouts and their parents pack for whatever comes with the weather.

I appreciate everybody's ideas!

Dick

Fellow LASMs
With regards to weather concerns I believe we have agreement that we are not going to provide additional bags for our participants but need to emphasize to them the likelihood of rain through our trip and the requirement that they travel prepared.  We need to recommend and require every participant carry adequate rain gear as well as a couple of large garbage bags to protect their duffel bags both for when arriving and departure at the end of the jamboree.  We recommend everyone have a couple of tough yard bags as well as a few smaller bags to pack wet gear in the duffels and a few gallon size ziplock freezer bags (not the ones with zippers because they will not seal tight).

As recommended below please send out a reminder to each of your participants.

Thanks,  Brad

See you Sunday!

Jim,

I think that is right.  Let’s just have LASM’s inform their participants about the weather and the concern on arrival day about keeping ALL their bags dry while moving to the campsite and until their tents are up.  And ask them each to bring a couple of large trash bags.

Brad, can you convey that to the LASMs if you haven’t already done so.

Kathy, we will not add extra trash bags to our Wal-Mart order.

Thanks.

The simplest approach is to ask each member to bring 3 – 40 gal. typical trash bags in their duffle/day pack.  It might be a little tight on the DIA-NYC trip, but when on the ground they can be unpacked and then moved to PH and WDC.  3 - 1mil bags does not take up much space.

My simple thought!

Thanks Brad,

We are ordering and picking up food for next morning’s breakfast while we are at the Wal-mart transferring gear from Graebel.  We have an opportunity to add trash bags (and scissors) to the order for this purpose if we needed.

I agree that repacking the duffels is probably not practical.

But the use as a poncho idea is interesting.

Any thoughts for the rest of the group?  (I don’t think I am authorized to send to the Jambo LASMs distribution list).
