Yacht Full of Climate Scientists Plots Giant Sea Gate to Save Manhattan - Bloomberg
Well kiddies, it looks like they're baaaack!
Malcolm Bowman is one of the few people who like humungous storm surge gates. There was one other person who was pushing for gates, but his name escapes me right now. Looks like he has now formed his own "working group" to advance their use. Well, if THEY are given credibility, what about all of US who have been around and involved much longer? Oh I forgot. There's a lot of money behind them and we're just plain old volunteers Notice that their mahogany walled yacht with glass walls got prominent mention in this article. Nothing like money to give you credibility.
Remember that when a 5 mile wide flood gate was proposed for NY Harbor a few years ago, it was universally panned. It would require, among other things, construction of artificial islands. Those of us who are older than dirt remember that the concept of artificial islands comes up every now and then as a sneaky way to get rid of nasty harbor sediments.
Been there, done that.
Meanwhile, while that huge flood gate in the Netherlands comes up from time to time as the be all and end all of flood control, there is a lot about it that isn't mentioned: Number One, it's in a fairly rural/industrial area, not a heavily populated coastline like NYC. Number Two, it takes up a lot of land. Say goodbye to a big hunk of Breezy Point if something like this is built and most importantly, Number Three: Even the Dutch, who know more about flood control than anyone else on earth, have started to retreat from the shoreline. They have realized that certain areas are gonna flood no matter what and it's best to leave them as open space areas called "polders". Meanwhile, here in NYC we are building high rise buildings in flood zones like mad.
Here we go again.
