RHDV a very contagious virus has infected rabbits in the south west of the United States.

In the late 1980's all the cottontail rabbits at the Jamaica Bay refuge died or disappeared. I sent two recently dead rabbits to the Wildlife Health Lab in NY State. The diagnosis was Tularemia ( aka Rabbit Fever) that they apparently got from our friends the ticks ! . To date, there are still no cottontail rabbits at the main area of the refuge along both sides of Crossbay Blvd. I believe that there are still some at FB Field and JFK Airport.

I can confirm eastern cottontail‘s at Floyd Bennett Field in the Gardens. They had the identifying white half moon around the eyes. I saw a juvenile one on Monday.
