Student Group Management device

As there are so many software versions out there now, I:m hoping you
could give me your personal favorites for managing student groups in
an online (private group option) freeware/shareware package.

I want students to work in groups, whereby individuals can login,
edit, add text, video clips, etc - and I can supervise and manage a
record of such login data. So group privacy would be important.

I plan to use this for aproject-based composition class.

Looking forward to your responses, and will be happy to explain
further if needed.
