Encouraging Autonomy in a Student Driven Classroom

This session reports findings on developing autonomy, promoting participation and increasing learner motivation by delegating typical teacher responsibilities to students. After a literature overview, the presenters will describe the class and activities, teachers’ findings, students’ comments, and conclude with an audience discussion of possible improvements and adaptation to new contexts.

Educating Gifted English Language Learners

The presenters discuss lessons learned from experts in the gifted education field. They share linguistically challenging strategies for gifted learners that have been field-tested and shown to be effective with students from a variety of backgrounds. The presenters conclude with implications for identification and placement of ELLs in gifted programs.

ESOL or Learning Disability: New Frontiers in an Old Battle

How does a child study team determine if underrepresented English learners’ persistent educational underachievement is due to learning disabilities and that it is not language-related? This presentation highlights concerns about second language acquisition, cross-cultural awareness, assessment practices, and student-centered advocacy in the decision-making process. Presenter introduces the lesson plans, integrating arts into the curriculum, applying Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences.
