5 days to go until the next jalsah event! We'll be at the Zenith this
friday, and it should be a great time. For those of you who know me
(and care), this will be the last event I'll be at before I skip town
for Istanbul, so consider this your last chance to catch a workshop
until I return from Turkey in a few years. If you play an instrument,
ANY instrument (except cow-bell), bring it down. If you can read
music, or pick up songs by ear, we'll teach you some Turkish and arabic
folk songs, and you can meet people who teach lessons, workshop, and
just about everything else relating to music from the Near East. We've
got a special guest, Carmine Guida, coming down to play oud and cumbus,
and Erika will be there teaching bellydance as well.
Don't miss it!
Hope you all had a good Turkey Day, too.
Nick

This Jalsah will be held at the Zenith in the Southside. We're putting
together a workshop that will incorporate music (both percussion and
melodic instruments) as well as bellydance in a group setting. We will
focus our workshop on the Turkish folk song "Ah, Bir Ataş Ver", and
the Arabic folk song "A Nada". At the beginning of the workshop, Nick
Ragheb will introduce the rhythmic patterns which accompany these
songs. Then the melody of the songs will be introduced, both with sheet
music and instruction from our clarinet artist, Melissa. After the
music has been reviewed, Erika May will be there to teach some of the
rudiments of bellydancing which accompany the music.
We invite any artist who plays a drum or any other melodic instrument
to come down and join in! We will also have the usual swap-meet table
and some snack food prepared by Elaine at the Zenith. The night is also
BYOB, so bring down a bottle of wine or a 6-pack if you'd like. The
rest of the evening will be an open jam and an open dance floor so come
prepared to either play some music or dance, and we hope to see you
there!
