to Jalsah
Hey guys,

we'll be holding out next Jalsah event at the Zenith
(www.zenithpgh.com) in the South Side. It will begin at 8:30 and run
till around midnight. We had a great time at the Union Project, but
we're excited to be in a more intimate space, and we'll be running
things a little bit differetly this time.
We have a great workshop on Turkish and Arabic folk music put together
by clarinet artist Melissa Murphey, bellydance instructor Erika May,
and myself. We'll be teaching the music, percussion, and accompianing
dance in one session, so if you're a drummer, a horn player, a string
player, a dancer, or whatever we've got a place for you. If you just
want to come watch and socialize, that's cool, too, but we're all about
getting people involved-- that's what this event is about.
In the spirit of that, I'll be opening up the night teaching the
percussion line to the Turkish folk song "Ah Bir Atas Ver", and the
accompianing rhythm to "A Nada", a Nubian folk song. Melissa will be
there with sheet music to instruct anyone playing a melodic instrument
in the tune, and Erika will be demonstrating some basic bellydance
moves to accompiany the pieces. The rest of the evening will be an
open jam. We will be playing a large selection of pieces from all over
the Middle East, and anyone is welcome to join in. Visiting from NYC,
Oud and Cumbus artist Carmine Guida will be with us and we will also
have a brief percussion performance by Phil & The Destroyers (Don't be
fooled by the name, that's an arabic percussion trio). Anyways, it
should be a great night, so come down, and if that didn't convince you,
then come to see me off to Turkey. I'll be moving to Istanbul to study
music for an indefinite period of time around the middle of December,
so this will be your last chance to see me off, and secure your place
on my couch in 6 months...

Remember: Jalsah on December 1st, 8:30-12:00 at the Zenith
(www.zenithpgh.com)

Oh, and it's BYOB

Be well,

Nick
