| KCR woos Azhar for Mayor’s post |

Hyderabad, Feb. 6: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti wants former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin to be its Mayoral candidate in the upcoming elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. It was the TRS chief, Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who asked Azharuddin to bat for his party when he met the latter at the house of the editor of an Urdu daily here on Wednesday. If the former cricketer was willing to enter the political crease, he would get to captain the city itself, or so went KCR’s promise. However, Azharuddin later told this correspondent that he had no political ambitions and would not join any party. He added that he had actually gone to meet Mr Khan Lateef Khan and the TRS supremo just happened to be there. “It was an accidental meeting,” said the former captain. But KCR told mediapersons that he had asked Azharuddin to join TRS since the latter belonged to Telangana region. “We discussed many things and I invited him to join TRS,” said KCR. “Azhar is very keen on politics and wants some more time to make up his mind. We are meeting again to take a final decision.” The offer to Azharuddin is part of the TRS attempt to woo Muslims in the prelude to the GHMC and Assembly polls. Party leaders feel that by fielding Mr Azharuddin as Mayor candidate, it could gain the support of Muslim youth and also give a scare to the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen in the city. That would be a double-sixer. |
