Dog owners should carry a poop scoop and aggressive dogs should be on leashes when there are crowds on the beach. Even playful dogs can scare children and hurt them because they get too excited when the kids scream.
We have had a couple of incidents at the Pergoda Street car park and on the beach close by of aggressive dogs and many dog fights. The beach is full of dog excrement and about 50 dogs if not more walk the beach every day and the poop is not collected by the owners. This is a popular beach for small children and families because of the the safety of the gully that the children can play in.
On an occasion 7.5 kgs of dog poop was collected from this car park alone let alone the beach in front of it. This is really sad and absolutely disgusting of the owners to allow this to happen. Do they not realize that others have to pick this up on their behalf?
It would be a sad day if and when dogs are not allowed on the beach anymore. They need to enjoy the beach and the water and excercise as much as people do but their owners need to respect other users of the beach and keep it clean.

Am with you there Cathy – dog owners get very upset when the suggestion is made that dogs should be banned from beaches, but in so doing should realise that we don’t want poop between our toes neither do we want children being infected, and if they behaved responsibly (the owner that is), there would be no need for correspondence such as this.
So many of said dog owners are not responsible – in fact tis a rare thing to see a dog owner walking its dog, carrying plakkie bag and scoop of some kind – in fact sometimes the dog has taken off in a direction on its own, and the owner wouldn’t know if it was pooping or not and so perhaps ignorance is bliss. COME ON OWNERS – BE CONSIDERED AND EARN YOUR PET’S PLACE IN THE SUN. Boolabong (sp??) has gone – let’s not chase other tourists away because of piles of poop!!

Cathy I quite agree with your complaint, but where do we draw the line. The fishermen have no respect for the beaches, I continually pick up pieces of broken glass, and then how does one control the dogs that live along the beaches?
I find that dogs that are kept on a leash are aggressive because they are protecting their space and the owners start shouting which makes matters worse. I am sure that if they were left to socialize they could all smell and chat to each other. I do blame the dog owners for most of the transgressions along the beach and they spoil it for others.

Denise
