Hi,
Unfortunately playing external files in not what PVRs are good at - it
is recording TV where they do a good job. If you've only just bought
it and this is really what you were after, you may be best to try a
return - the 7050 was primarily a Dick Smith item I think and they
have a good return policy.
It can be done, but not simply. First you need to use a file converter
program on your PC (something like Quick media converter from Cocoon
software which is free) and you need to convert it to transport stream
format (TS). Then once done you need to run it through my toppy
filemaker software, and then you copy the files it creates to a USB /
HDD and play them.
If you want to play AVI's a lot, I would recommend either a DVD player
with AVI and USB (lots around and pretty cheap - should be under $100)
or a dedicated media player (again a few around - but a bit more -
maybe $200) something like a Popcorn Hour (odd name but search and you
will find it) or a Western Digital Media Centre.
Myself, I have a cheap (read $500) 5.1 home theatre with built in
upscaling DVD player, USB port, and iPod dock, and it does what I need
as well as giving better sound than the TV.
Hope that helps. If you stick with the toppy ask any questions here,
Cheers.
