We have about 30 windows servers most 2016, currently about 1/2 of them are Hyper-V. We will definitely will be moving more of the servers to Hyper-V guests in the future. All our Hyper-V hosts are standalone with direct attached storage. The rest are direct attached standalone as well. We do a Disk to Disk to Tape backup strategy and we have one large server that all the other servers back their images up to and then that goes to tape each day using Backup Exec

We have had StorageCraft Shadowprotect for a long time but the licenses we have now are kind of out of date (5.2.7). We have put a few of the newer servers on Veeam free version and have been very impressed with its capabilities and are thinking of moving all the servers to Veeam backups.

Are you sure about that? We are using the Free Veeam Agent 2.0.0 on our exchange 2016 Server that are in a DAG and we are not having any problems with Log files needing truncated? (maybe because they are in a DAG?) SQL not really a concern for us as we always do seperate SQL based backups on those databases to clear those logs.

This may because you are using different products. Veeam Agent for Windows vs Veeam Backup Free Edition.Two different products both enabling you to backup your data. One is agent based the other is agentless.
