WhatsApp tips and tricks: WhatsApp, one of the most popularly used messaging applications, can be used in several languages. The most common language used for messaging on the application is English. However, do you know that you can change WhatsApp's language? Yes, WhatsApp's language can be changed on both the Android devices and the iPhones. As per the information provided by WhatsApp, the app is available in over 40 languages on iPhone and up to 60 on Android.
WhatsApp follows any language that you pick for your phone. For example, if you change the language of your phone to Spanish, WhatsApp will be in Spanish. For the WhatsApp users in India, several regional languages are also available. The regional languages available include Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, and Gujarati.

If you are using an Android phone, you might be able to change WhatsApp's language from within the app. One option is to choose your language on the initial Welcome screen. Or, if you are already using WhatsApp.

Step 5: The newly added language will show up in the list of languages. Now, open WhatsApp chat again. Touch and hold the Globe icon. Choose the language with which you want to type in WhatsApp. The keyboard characters will switch to the new typing language.
Tip: If you always want to type in WhatsApp using the newly added language, you can make it the default language. For that, tap on the Pencil icon at the top of the Languages screen. Drag the language that you want to make as default using the three-bar icon to the top. Basically, the top-most language is taken as the default typing language by Gboard.
Step 4: Scroll down to the All languages section and tap on the language that you want to type in WhatsApp. Select the keyboard layout for the new typing language and hit the Add button at the top.
Step 5: With the new typing language enabled, open any WhatsApp chat again. Then, swipe right or left on the spacebar to switch to the language with which you are interested in typing in WhatsApp.
Tip: You can make the newly selected language the default typing language for all apps. For that, go to Samsung Keyboard Settings > Languages and types. Tap on the three-dot icon at the top and select Reorder. Touch and hold the desired typing language using the two-arrow icon and move it to the top to set it as the default language. Now, whenever you type anything using Samsung Keyboard, it will be written using the new language.

So, if you accidentally changed the language on the smartphone or need to change the WhatsApp language for a short time, you have to adjust or add the language in the smartphone settings. There you can also change the WhatsApp menu language and/or the WhatsApp keyboard language. If you use WhatsApp for Mac or WhatsApp for PC as a desktop app, the language settings of your smartphone will also be relevant.
Step 4: Once you have added a language or drag up a selected language as your preferred system language, the Android language will change automatically. WhatsApp will also adjust the language display automatically.
There doesn't seem to be a pattern, like what was the input language when I last used the app. Sometimes it appears to switch to a different language even for the same app (e.g. Safari) when I switch somewhere else and switch back. I have 3 input languages installed: English, Simplified Chinese and Emoji. Though the input never defaults to Emoji.
Let me explain it with the help of an example. Suppose in a messaging app, you prefer conversing with some users in Simplified Chinese and with some in English. It's possible to program the app so that a text input field remembers the last used keyboard language. This way, the last chosen language is automatically selected for you. However, this doesn't work with the Emoji keyboard. This approach can be taken to aid user convenience.
I don't know what the answer is but I think it is a bug by any other name. Ever since having one brief WhatsApp conversation with someone in Germany, in which I used only English words, my iPhone switches to a German keyboard virtually every time I use it, and insists on switching back to it within the same entirely English conversation no matter how many times I re-select English.
If you add keyboards for other languages, you can type in two languages without having to switch between keyboards. Your keyboard automatically switches between the two languages you use most often. (Not available for all languages.)
If you add a keyboard for a different language, the corresponding language is automatically added to the Preferred Language Order list. You can view this list and add languages directly to it in Settings > General > Language & Region. You can also reorder the list to change how apps and websites display text.

Last night, my phone (Samsung Galaxy S6) updated from Android 6.something to Android 7.0. Since I use my phone for typing both Dutch and English very often, occasionally even within the same conversation, and I am a very sloppy typist, I used to have predictive text and autocomplete/autocorrect on for both Dutch and English. This was working (mostly) fine: it would seemingly just find the closest approximation to what I had typed in either language.
Since the update, I have to explicitly choose a language by sliding the space bar. This is annoying, since it adds at least one action, and furthermore I keep forgetting, having to delete whatever I have written so far before switching languages and retyping it.

On my Windows 10 I am using 3 different keyboard layouts. Whenever I type something in some application the operating system is matching the proofing language for spelling and grammar check with the language of the keyboard layout in use: for example, when I am using the ENG keyboard layout then English is used as proofing language.
Note: despite not directly addressing the question in hand, I'm leaving this answer here as I think this is useful info regarding managing the language and keyboard settings on Windows, and could be used to mitigate the problem described.
I often write to contacts who speaks different languages.So when I'm having discussions with an italian contact and a french contact at the same time, i have to switch between discussions but I also always have to change the keyboard language!
There should be a generic framework to save settings per contact. Besides language, another this I change per person I communicate is the e-mail From-address. To my work contacts I send e-mail always using the work e-mail and to friends using my private e-mail.
Okay, so it isn't just I who gets mildly annoyed by switching. :) It would be a smooth little touch if this feature was implemented. Also it would be nice if our email address(es) were added to the prediction dictionaries as a whole rather than each word separately.
Yes, this would be fantastic. I regularly type in three different languages, and would love it if the phone remembered the settings on at least a per-contact basis. It should also be rather simple to implement, I would assume.
