[Jade Regent] The Red Box

The group assembles and rides out of town, meeting up with Daergast and Bug on the Lost Road, near the woods across the bridge, just outside of Sandpoint.

"We need to recover that box," says Shan, over the pouring rain.

Bug sits in front of Daergast on his borrowed horse, Tara and Nico each have a borrowed horse of their own, and Shan's horse supports both him and Lorus, who is sitting behind him.

The open road awaits.

Tara looks around in the rain, "Well, so much for following tracks in this rain.  Do we head back to the swamp?  Was he heading that way?"

Shan rides up next to Daergast, and spurs the horse faster.

The group travels in the rain for a while, passing by the Brinestump Marsh, and eventually they come to the bridge over the Foxglove River.  They must decide whether to go along the north side of the river, where Reta seems to have gone, or the south side, where they last had the trail.

"Shan, I think where we were was a good ford, let's check to see how much the water has risen first at that spot, ok?"  Says Daergast.

[Michael New]

Shan responds, "Would you rather start on the north side, where you may pick up the tracks, or the south side, where you last saw them?"

Around this time you notice a few travelers on the path heading east toward you..  It is a man and woman on horseback.  They ride up to a safe distance and the man, who is garbed in chain mail, and armed, calls out, "Greetings, travelers.  Is it Foxglove Manor you seek?"

(You are at the red dot.  The ford is at the red line, about a mile from you.)

"Of the river, you mean?"  Asks Daergast.

"Yes," says Shan to Daergast. 

[Gary Thomas]

"I just want to make sure it hasn't risen, unless we can cross via a bridge and backtrack to where the tracks should be?" Says Daergast.

Nico rides closer to them, Actually, we're after some goblins that were raiding the city back a ways.  Don't suppose you've seen sign or tracks of such critters.  Did you come from the Foxglove Manor direction?

"The city?  Do you mean Sandpoint or Magnimar?  Well, yes, we're from Foxglove Manor and in fact, we captured a goblin there last night.  It was sneaking around in our barn, upsetting our horses, and hiding behind our woodpile," replies the man.  The woman, you see now, is more like a teenaged girl, wearing too much berry-juice on her cheeks, dressed up in fine (but wet) traveling clothes.

[Anodyzed]

Sandpoint.   A group of them took down a wagon and some pilgrims.  The town sent us out to stop the problem, put a bounty on them.  But apparently a few got away.  

Nico looks at the rest of his own party, Anyone got any other questions for these travelers?   Oh, I know.  So Foxglove Manor is your estate?  If need be, can we rest there as we search for the remaining goblins?

Tara adds, "We will do our best to keep more Goblins from bothering you, or your animals."

The man nods and says back, "I am Valerian.  And this is Terese.  I'm sure you'll find Lady Sendeli cooperative, as she has a vested interest in eliminating the goblin problem."

Tara and Lorus notice Valerian gives Terese a meaningful look when he introduces her.

The man and girl bid you good day and ride off to the North.  The rain is coming down a little less now, but the wind is picking up.

The group rides along the road, heading west.  It's much easier going than through the field, and your horses have a lot more confidence on it.  The rain falls.  After a short distance, you can see the tree, on the other side of the river, where you caught the goblin yesterday.  It is a tall oak with a wide umbrella of branches.  There are people under it.  As you get closer, you see it is actually two people and a goblin.  The goblin has a rope around its neck, and one of the two men is holding the other end of it.

The other man is kneeling and looking at something on the ground.  A bloody body?

Still you get closer and the men look up at you.  The one who was kneeling now stands up in front of whatever he was looking at.

The goblin screams.  "Killers!  Killers!  Goblin murders!" as she points at you.

[dungeon master]

Tara starts to reach for her sword then lowers her arm, "Good day, Are you natives to this area?" trying to ignore the Goblin.

Tara glares at the Goblin, "Yes steal, Yes steal, you little vermin, from the good people of Sandpoint.  Now shut your annoying little mouth, no good vermin."

The two men confer for a bit and then one of them bends down and picks up a small red chest, which he had been standing in front of.  Then the two of them go down to the river and start to wade across it, pulling the goblin behind them.

The goblin makes whining and drowning noises, but they ignore her and they all make it to your side without a problem.

You notice the small red lacquered chest is covered in dirt, as if it had been buried recently.  The goblin you captured must have been sleeping very near to it.

Tara dismounts from her horse, watching the two Men,

"We were told two Goblins were seen carrying a chest, sometime yesterday.  That one, looks to be the right size for two of those ver.. uh, Goblins, to carry."

As the men continue down the road, Shan starts to follow.  He is quiet at first, but then he asks, "Did you open it up?  You see, I am expecting it to contain a letter."

One of the men, the one pulling the goblin-rope, responds, "Aye, we took a quick gander.  I did not see a letter, but one could have been underneath the other stuff."

You all follow, and Bug says, "Hey, Foxglove Manor!  Isn't that the place overrun with ghouls and such?  Wait, we're not going there, are we???"

The second mans turns and smiles at Bug.  "Yes, that is exactly where we are going."  The first man laughs at this, and the second one joins in.

[Gary Thomas]

""We'll that doesn't make any sense now.  Hold up fellas?  Maybe we can take a look to see if there is a letter, if you don't mind?" Replies Daergast.

[Anodyzed]

Nico rides forward, beyond the men then turns his horse back toward them, maintaining some distance from them, and not trying to appear threatening, but definitely getting on the far side of them from the rest of the group.

[Michael New]

The men look skeptical as they are now flanked by these armed strangers.  One of them says, "I told you, I didn't see a letter.  Now, we'll go to the manor, and talk to Lady Sendeli, and if she's understanding of your interests, she may just allow you to have a letter from her box, if indeed such a thing is found."

Up ahead a few hundred yards you see a wagon on the road, with two riders up front, heading towards you.

The goblin, Reta, pulls at her rope like a dog on a leash.  She makes a choking sound.

Nico backs his horse to the side slightly so the wagon has room to pass when it gets there, and so he can keep an eye on who's behind him as well as the men with the box.

Tara follows the two Men, watching the Goblin, if it escapes, she will slash at it with her sword

The wagon approaches, and comes up and stops next to the two men and goblin.  "Is everything okay here?" asks one of the new men.  They look weather-worn and dirty, most likely laborers of some sort.  Their flatbed wagon is mostly empty, but it does have a sack and a backpack, and several broken pieces of wood; and it also has a lot of sawdust.

The man carrying the box says, "Yes, we're just heading to the Manor.  Do you think you could give us a ride back, my leg is a little sore?"

The wagon man replies, "Well, we're just heading to Magnimar...  Oh, okay, sure, hop aboard.  Guess you'll be letting that one go?"  He indicates the goblin.

The two with the box jump aboard the wagon, after pushing the goblin to clamber up.  "That's up to Lady Sendeli, innit?"  He looks at your group now, and asks, "So, you coming to Foxglove Manor?  There be no more dead-like creatures there now."

[Michael New]

The wagon turns around, with some effort, and the four people with one leashed goblin head west to Foxglove Manor.

"I heard the manor was overrun by ghouls and such," says Bug.

"And I heard that the sister of Altern Foxglove has moved in and got rid of the undead," says Shan, as he pushes his horse to follow the wagon, his eyes never leaving the red box.

You follow the trail for a few miles, at one point crossing the descending river rapids via a newly-built stone bridge, a lovely cove less than a mile wide off to your right.  On a sunny day it must be a beautiful place, hardly somewhere you would imagine ghouls to reside.

Beyond the bridge, on the bluff overlooking the ocean, you see a large structure with scaffolding towers and ladders next to it, and several people milling about despite the dank weather.

Nico follows along with the others, not liking this talk of undead, but keeping his thoughts on the matter to himself.

[Sammy Claus]

"Well Bug, if there are ghosts and ghouls about the place, it's a good thing we brought a stout cleric as yourself," Lorus says as he admires the scenery before moving on.

They approach the Manor, and when they stop they put the box down on the ground of the somewhat cramped barn.  One of the men goes inside.  The goblin pretends to choke on the rope as she is moved around.  Soon, a young but elegant Lady bearing a parasol emerges from the house, which is under major reconstruction, and approaches you all.  You see a fair resemblance between her and the girl you saw on the road earlier - she must be her mother.

She smiles at you.  "I understand you have some ... interest in the goblin's box.  But first things first.  Who are you and who sent you here?"

[Gary Thomas]

"We are from many places, however now we are working for Lady Ameiko; investigating that RedBox, and I am Daergast, my companions are: Bug, Tara, Lorus, Shan and Nico."  He completes pointing each out in turn with a formal bow the way he has seen humans do.

[Michael New]

A few young guards come out and join the crowd.

The Lady asks one of the men to open the box.  He opens it and inside you can see a base of gold and silver coins (hundreds of them), and on top of them, six shuriken and just two other items; a long hairpin with a red pearl at one end, and a folded up fan of gold and ivory.  Both look valuable, and the box itself, now that you see it up close, looks to be of fine workmanship and materials under all that dirt.  The box and the items, and indeed many of the coins, are obviously of eastern (Tian) make, or at least were made to look that way.

"And what is your interest in the box?" she asks, as she reaches down and picks up the fan.  She opens it, and displays a fine picture of a small lizard of some sort among cherry blossoms.  And you notice there is something on the other side, a crude drawing.  She looks at the drawing and frowns.  "This would be a fine item if it had not been defaced thus..."

Shan looks into the box and says, "I was expecting a letter.  Something my father had mentioned.  Do you mind if I look under the coins?"

The Lady tilts her head sideways and nods, saying to her man, "Pour the coins on the ground, gently, in case there is a fragile letter inside."

The man slowly turns the box over after handing the shuriken to the other man and the hairpin to the lady.  The coins pour on the ground.    They represent a good deal of food and drink (or better) for a normal person, but perhaps for the lady they represent a small portion of the repairs to her manor house.

Looking at the coins, and in the box, there is nothing else, no letter.  Shan looks surprised and disappointed.

The lady, seeing you all somewhat disappointed to have lost the box, asks, "Please, tell me how it is that you tracked this pathetic creature to the river.  Were you hunting goblins?"  She waves the fan at her face, even though it is not at all hot out.

[Gary Thomas]

"Not hunting exactly, but well, just this one I guess.  I've a keen nose for such things, wasn't hard at all."  Responds Daergast.

Tara was about to affirm the Lady's question, then Daergast spoke up, she decided to say something else.

"We volunteered to try to recover items that may have been taken from a wagon.  People we talked to said that it was Goblins that took the items."

Shan says to the Lady, "We do not know who the box belonged to before it was the goblins'.  We do, however tend to be suspicious of goblins, and I had thought this might be the box my father had mentioned to me before he died.  Unfortunately, I was mistaken, though this is certainly of Tian origin.  Do you mind if I look at that fan?"

The Lady looks at him and at the fan, and says, "Certainly."  She hands it to him and he starts to look at it.

"Your father, is he an Elder?  That fan looks more than interesting Shan maybe my knowledge of the elements will help in ascertaining its real purpose.  Some use these as weapons." Says Daergast who takes some interest in exactly what is in the box that has caused all the effort and tribulations.

Daergast notices the poor writing on the fan, but sees it is a map of part of the Brinestump Marsh.

"Say Shan, let me see that fan if you don't mind, or yourself for that matter lady?"  Asks Daergast, as he looks to Shan and then his host.

Shan hands it over to Daergast.

"We'll this looks really interesting, guys come and take a look."  Daergast studies the map in such a fashion that his companions may also see.

There is an old barn at the back of the property, which one of Lady Sendeli's guard brings you to.  At first you are surprised it is even standing, but as you enter you see it has been rigorously shorn up from the inside with many thick trees and beams.

You sit down, and the guard joins you, and pretty soon you are brought some stew and bread, and reasonably okay ale.

After a short meal and drink, and a chat with the guard, it is mentioned that the construction workers need to eat now, so you will have to vacate the barn.  You find your horses have been watered and fed.

The Lady doesn't see you off.  But you have your fan with its crude map on the back, and meals in your stomachs.

Still not completely trusting the sudden benefactors, Nico will eat lightly, and carefully watch the guard that is with them.  Once done and escorted from the barn, he looks carefully at his horse and the way the guards are dealing with the workers.

Once the group is away from the guard or others, Tara will comment, "I think the map on the fan, lead to the box that the vermin were carrying."

Nico doesn't trust fully, but finds nothing amiss in the food or ale, or the treatment of the horses.  Perhaps the Lady, being new to this area, is trying to give a good impression to those from Sandpoint.  Perhaps she's just a kind person.

You may have noticed the map on the fan appears similar to the southern part of the Brinestump Marsh.  There even seems to be a path down into the marsh, leading off from the path you're on now.

Your horses continue to follow the trail.  That's the nice thing about horses - they will do a pragmatic job of going where they think you want them to, until you tell them otherwise.  This works marvelously as long as there is just one trail.

They will continue thus until you reach the road.  If anyone wants them to veer off in another direction, they must steer them so.
