As was its habit, the sun announced its appearance a little while before it actually arrived in the sky of Sandpoint.  Last night's rain had cleansed the cobblestones and the buildings of their recent dirt and grime, so now there was an air of freshness and newness through the town.  And with the crier's calls promising a new mayoral announcement this morning, the freshness of the day was suddenly painted with anticipation and excitement.

As townsfolk gathered outside the town hall, speculation was rampant as to what the issue was.  Soon the rumor started spreading, and though it's not clear who gave it birth, it was abundantly clear that only the mayor would be its fair opponent in battle, and possibly defeat it.  The rumor was this: last night a cart, or wagon, or possibly caravan (though not likely, as more evidence of such would have been seen) had been attacked by goblins, the driver had been killed, and its sole passenger, a crazed, violent, and bizarre looking potential patient of Habe's Sanitarium, had escaped and had not been caught yet.  That, plus something about a dead priest, fireworks, and a crying toddler, made the whole thing quite confusing.

All the commotion and noise died down immediately when Mayor Kendra Deverin appeared at the top of the steps.  All wanted to hear what was going on.  Sure enough, she only waited until the crowd had quieted and then she got straight to the point.

"Fellow Sandpointers, you might have heard about more troubles with goblins last night.  Indeed, there was an attack on a single covered wagon just as it was arriving in town from the North.  It is with great sadness that I report that Father Kenvin Yung of Windsong Abbey was found dead very early this morning by the town guard.  Furthermore, a shackled and chained patient was in the wagon, which was en route to Habe's Sanitorum.  He has gone missing.  Other details are unclear, but there was some blood and definite evidence of a goblin attack.

If any of you knew father Yung, I offer my deepest sympathies and regrets.

As you all know, the goblin attacks have been increasing of late, and it's past time to do something about it.  As such, I am reinstating the town's old offer of ten gold pieces for each Brinestump Marsh goblin ear brought to the Town Hall, and three hundred for the head of the chieftain named Gutwad.  These goblins are a nuisance, a deadly plague to the area that must be stopped!

There is little more to say...

Now, I've not yet had a bite to eat today, so if you have any questions please join me in the Rusty Dragon.  I'll answer any question I can."

The crowd mutters curses at the goblins, and some seem to blame the mayor, some Habe, the owner of the Sanitarium, some even blame Father Yung for traveling unprotected in a dangerous land.  Soon enough the same crowd disperses, and some individuals who want to talk to the mayor amble southward toward the inn individually, and soon enough they are comprised of a few small groups.

You a part of one such group as you head purposefully toward the Rusty Dragon; when you hear a call.  It sounds like a child's moan, and in short order you note it is coming from a nearby well.

Nico, hearing the child's moans coming from the well, will go over to it investigate.
Looking down the well, Nico tries to see what's down there.

Lorund begins to amble towards the Rusty Dragon, then suddenly a thought hits him, Ameiko might be there. He runs over to the nearest window and starts running his fingers through his hair in an attempt to straighten the unruly mess. Then he notices a smudge on his shirt from breakfast and lets out an exasperated moan."How am I going to get that off my shirt!" he cries out. Hearing the voice his attention is drawn to the well and he thinks, "Water, just what I need." Heading over towards the well he hears the cry again and thinks, " Oh, that can't be good", and gets out his rope as he heads to the well.

The sunlight shines part of the way into the well, and for anyone looking into it, their eyes adjust in a short time.

"Hello," says a high voice from below.  It sounds a little too mature and calm to be coming from a young child.

You can make out a small form at the bottom of the well, waving.

"Would you be able to throw me a rope, please?"

The well's rope is cut just a few feet below the winch's axle.

"Certainly, but what are ya ya Doin', down the Well?". Replies Daergast.  A medium built Dwarf witha combination of blues, blacks and earthly tones on his clothes and leather armor.  Wearing a pack and carrying a sword sheath. Tying off and lowering a rope as he speaks.  Having Blue upon Blue eyes and a black beard and hair.

An Asian-looking man wearing armor carrying gear as he rides on his
horse traveling through Varisa. Now he enters Sandpoint and looks
around. Seeing the tavern, he rides to there and ties his horse
outside. Going inside, he approaches the bar looking for the barkeep.

Helping the others with their ropes, Nico, a half elf dressed in Leather Armor, with a Rapier on his hip and a short walking stick, calls down the well, Can you take hold of the rope so we can pull you out?

Looking at the others helping, a female Human, a male Dwarf, and the one in strange armor (well, strange to Nico), Nico couldn't help but comment out loud, Aren't we the diverse group to be pulling something up from a well?  I hope the prize is worth the effort!

Daergast not getting the results he wanted and seeing more rope. Says "Eh, odd no?" looking about at those around him, leans down the well and says "What're ya ta be Doin' down there? Have ya no water at yer house?". Me names Daergast Unterberg, What have you been named?  Are you being in any kind of pain, or danger now?"

Daergast is an eccentric looking swordsman, dressed in a nifty cape and clothes with leather armor seemingly here and there in place of clothing and vice Versa.  Looking most foreign indeed. He has a Scimitar, an overfilled backpack, and last but not least several odd looking pouches and a few canteen cases, one non standard.  Eyes Azure blue with a black beard and hair.

The voice comes up from below, "Thanks!  Give me a minute!"

It looks as if he's tying the rope to something, and after a bit he says, "Heave ho!"

As you pull him up, you see a small, white creature, bald, very pale.

"It's bug!" you hear him mutter, and you're not sure what he's talking about, for you see no bug.

He's small enough to be sitting in the bucket as you all haul him to the ledge of the well.  You wonder if this might be the escaped prisoner?  Despite being in the water for who knows how long, and being barely clothed (just a loincloth), he does not seem to be shivering or uncomfortable at all.  In fact, he gives you a pleasant smile as he comes into the light.

More townspeople gather round and wonder what is going on.

As the little creature climbs out of the bucket, in which he had deposited only his rear quarters, and onto safe ground, you notice a few things.  First, he seems to be, judging by his large feet, and despite his very pale skin, bald head, and diminutive stature, a Halfling.  Yes, for a Halfling he's quite small, just over two feet from head to toe.

You also notice a mark, like a third nipple right in between his two small ones.  Only this one is white, even whiter than the rest of his skin, as if someone had taken alabaster and rubbed it on him.  And in the middle of that small white circle is a tiny, darker circle of a color that, on anyone else, would resemble the color of Varisian skin.

"Bug." he says firmly. "I'm so happy you rescued me from that awful incarceration!"

Staying back away from the halfling, Nico asks, Bug?  Is that your name?  And who put you down that well?  What happened to your clothes?

Nico waits for only a few moments for the halfling to explain, and if the explanation is not forthcoming, he'll leave this 'site' near the well and head for the mayor's speech.

Bug looks at the others, confused.  "Escorting?  No, I was tagging along.  Oh, do you mean that poor soul Barôr?  He was just sitting in the back when all these big creatures with wide mouths and sharp teeth attacked.  Laughing, they were, and they grabbed us out of the wagon.  I saw them find poor Barôr and cut open his special blanket.  He was all shackled and chained, you see, but that didn't stop him.  He's huge, Barôr, and he kicked two of them and then started using his chain on them.  I think he must have killed one, oh dear!  Then I couldn't see as they pulled my vestments over my head, stripped me down, and hauled me off somewhere.  Here, I guess.  I must have passed out, because the next thing I knew I was in cold water - stuck down a well.  It was raining so I suppose nobody heard my cries for help.  Thank the Light that you were coming by just now!"

Knowing the mayor, you are sure she and the captain of the guard would like to hear this little..... person's story.  Plus, of course, you are curious to hear any answers to question she may be asked about the goblins.

A short, stout elf man sat quietly at a table in the tavern waiting on his breakfast order. At first he thought the empty eddifece was perfect for a quiet repast, but minutes after the barmaid had taken his order dozens of people began rushing into the establishment as if something big was about to happen.

The Mayor of Sandpoint, Kendra Deverin, enters the tavern and waves to the tavern's owner, Ameiko, Kaijitsu.  She sits down at a table with a young man, presumably a helper of sorts.  She looks around in a friendly way, nodding at the patrons and expecting the questions to start right away.

Ameiko, who is greeting her old friend Shan-Shuno, takes the man's order and then, calling it back to Bethana, continues on to the Mayor's table to talk to her.

Not much being one for decorum, Nico will move to the table with the wizard Lorus and ask if he can join him.  "Don't seem to be many other seats, and I really want to hear what the Mayor has to say.  Not to mention get a meal and an ale.  You're Lorus aren 't you?  I've heard of you."  Not waiting for the answer to the first question, Nico will throw a leg over the chair and plop his frame down, patting the table to get a waitress' attention in the process.   "Bring us both an ale, and a mug of stew for myself."   Then, turning back to Lorus, "Allow me to set you a mug."

When Bug starts asking for Father Yung, the Mayor stands up and goes over to him.

"Are you a friend of Father Yung?"  She seems a bit surprised by what he's wearing.  "Breeve, pleaae bring my coat."

Bug nods and says, "Is he okay?  He is like my own father to me."

"There was an attack on his wagon last night, just before it entered town."

Bug looks pained.  "I know, I was there with him."

She looks shocked.  "You were there?  What happened?  All we learned was that the...  That Goblins attacked a wagon.  A wagon driven by Father Yung."

Breeve arrives with a large coat, which he puts over the Halfling.

Bug says, "And Father Yung was injured and is being taken care of somewhere?"  He is on the verge of tears.

The mayor, already kneeling and looking Bug in the eye, puts her hands on his shoulders and shakes her head.  "He was found near the wagon.  The goblins killed him.  I'm so sorry."

Bug looks around the room.  All eyes are on him as his eyes water.  Eventually he says, "I would like a room.  I have no money."

Ameiko, standing not far away, says "Follow me, Miles."

something from it about the attackers."

Ameiko is happy to bring Shan-Shuno some tea.

She says to the two tables of heroes, "So, you're going to go kill some Goblins?  Ears and a head?  That's probably for the best.  I fear for my life whenever I'm out on the road.  And those farmers have to deal with them all the time."

Tara nods, "We will do our best to end the problems with the Goblins,
and try to bring back the head of the leader of them."

"Sounds like a plan, we could use a ranger though," Lorus says to Nico.

Nico will politely decline more ale, but ask Lorus if he wants to go to the attack site now.  SUrely the team going after the goblins won't leave til tomorrow, I think someone said after the funeral for Father Yung.   So this might be the best time to take a look at the scene of the attack.

Nico nods solemnly in agreement.  It sure does seem like a Ranger would do well to lead us through a swamp.  Are there none here in Sandpoint that we could convince to accompany us?  Or maybe if not a Ranger, perhaps a Druid would be next best?

"I can lead you wherever we need to get.  I can even follow tracks on bare rock.  Followed em right out of the earth I did. N here I am.". Says Daerghast.  Waiting for that other ale.  "Do we know where their territory might be and have access to a map?"

Shan-Shuno smiles and thanks her. Drinking some tea and notices she is
paying attention and listening in some. "So, amekio, you need help
with something?"

Ameiko, buzzing around her establishment, says, "Thank you, no, everything here is under control...  It's out there that concerns me.  Remember both my father and my brother were killed by Goblins.  Are you going to join the Goblin hunt, Shan-Shuno?"

"Ameiko, have ya a fair idea of where they be holed up?" says Daerghast polishing off the last of his Ale. Looking around for someone to give coins to.

Ameiko replies to Daergast* "they have a village in the marsh, I believe.  There are so many of them I'm sure you can find them.  But be careful, the marsh is dangerous.  There's supposedly a witch there, you know, and another monster of some sort."

Before the funeral, Nico will move about the village asking folk what they know about the marsh and the denizens likely to be found there.

Tara will finish her one ale, eat a meal, and get up, preparing to head out.

Anyone want to come with and investigate the area?"

Nico will agree to go with Tara.   I think Lorus will come too.  And maybe we can get Daergast to come too.
