Ameiko pulls something out of the leather bag, and it's a small (5" tall) blown glass statue of a female warrior.  Her hair is bright red, and she is not wearing a lot of clothes.  "I thought one of the boys would like this, but maybe you'll like it too, Tara?"

Some of you know that Ameiko has been running the Glassworks business since her father died a while ago.  This must be from there.

Nico looks surprised, Really?  We're going back out to the swamp, in the dark, with no rest?
He shakes his head negatively for a moment, then says, Well, I guess I'm at least lucky got a meal.  Let me go get my stuff.

A bit later, Nico returns, dressed again for the trail, with his pack and weapons.

Shan says, "Well, the goblins were on the road, moving away from the swamp, at least for a bit.  I wonder where they were going."

He thinks for a minute, then walks to the travelers and talks to them for a bit.  Shortly, he returns, and says to the group, "Those people confirmed that the box the goblins were carrying was small, and may have been red.  If that's the case, it is important to Sandpoint, both historically and for its future.  I agree, we must go get it.  Ameiko, is there any chance we could borrow four horses from someone?  Fast ones?"

Ameiko looks surprised, but nods and says, "I'll ask you about that later, Shan."  She looks around the tavern and spots someone.  "Danora, do you have a minute?"  Pretty Danora Hosk comes over to your table, looking a bit tipsy but otherwise attentive.  "Hey, A-mey, what's up?"

Ameiko says to her, "These fine folks are in need of four," she pauses, looking at Shan for confirmation, "four saddled light horses.  It's urgent, so could you tell your brother this and get him to get the horses ready, right away?  He can hold me responsible for any problems.  They'll all go with you.  Bug, can you ride with Shan, or another?"

Bug nods quietly.

"There is also the evidence of an undead presence in the swamp, we can't ignore that," Lorus points out to the others.

OOC: the goblins mentioned in their own crude way about something zombie like that attacked the village before we got there. I think that's why they stole the fireworks.

OOC: it seems to me I'm the only one in the games we play that buys light sources. and in games I'm running I'm surprised people just walk into a dark place and not even think of the lighting.

Bug pipes up, "I fear my spells are almost depleted, too.  Though I think I could still be of some use healing injuries.  What about you, Daergast?"

He inspects Tara's new glass statuette.  "But I am concerned of what those goblins may do to others, like they did to Father Yung."


Shan glares at Lorus, and says, "Tara is right.  There is no dishonor in staying here, and getting a well-deserved rest.  I will be going to look for them, though, and any of you are free to come."

Danora looks confused, and she finds a chair and sits down.



The statuette looks something like this, only a bit less fine, as it's made of blown glass.

"If we let them get to far away, we may loose them. I think we should close the distance and nap in the road and get a night in a bed with another meal when it's done.  Best to get some light for anyone who needs it and close the distance."  Says Daergast.

The group figures out who is going and who is not, and heads out, following Danora.  Ameiko decides to go along too, telling Mr. Fish she'll be back in a few minutes.

You make your way to the appropriately named Goblin Squash Stables, and Danora goes inside to fetch her brother Daviren.  He seems a bit grumpy, but when he sees Ameiko he cracks a smile, and says, "So's, oy hear ya been squashin' goblins!  Good on ya, then.  You need me horses to kitch the stregglers?  If 'Meiko says yer good for 'em, thur all yers."

He takes you out to the stables, which are fairly large and house a dozen horses and ponies, or more, and between himself, Danora, Shan and others, you soon have enough horses saddled up for the whole group, less Bug, who will ride with Shan or Daergast.

All set to go, you are ready to ride out.

(let me know of other preparations you need to have made; and whether Lorus is going or not)

Tara would have light sources before getting horses, then, picks the biggest horse in the stable for herself and gets ready to ride out.

Since Daergast won't be attempting to use the horse for anything,  but riding he offers Bug to come with.  He makes sure the stable hand adjusts the stirrups appropriately.

Nico finds a lighter horse than Tara selected, but one that seems sturdy enough for a half elf that is human sized.  Putting a few torches in his pack for those without low light vision or darkvision, Nico saddles up and follows Tara, his sling in a ready position across his shoulders.

The group finds horses appropriate to them, although the horses are not all that different from each other.  Shan has a good eye, though, and helps you pick them out.

Shan rides off, followed by Nico, and Tara, and finally Daergast with Bug in front of him.  Bug waves to Daviren and Danora as you all gallop away; he really doesn't take up much space, although his oversized chain shirt adds weight to his presence.

Once on the road, it is very dark, so Shan stops to ask Bug if he can provide light.  Bug complies, casting the spell on his own club.  With that, the group riding starts again.

You follow The Lost Coast Road out of town, and it's a good six miles to the bridge.  Being on horseback makes it so much faster, and easier, since you can still breath and call to each other.  As you go, you sense, in your minds at least, the Brinestump Marsh off to your right, where all those goblins were.  You are glad you do not have to enter that swamp again, at least not tonight.

Riding on, you cross one small bridge over the Soggy River, then farther along the road you come to another bridge, this one being a slightly larger stone bridge which crosses the Foxglove River.  If the moon were not occluded by the clouds, you could likely see Foxglove Manor off to the west, atop a cliff and overlooking the ocean.  Bug refreshes the spell on his club, and he holds it exactly as if it were a torch.

After getting to the designated point Daergast assists bug in dismounting and ties up the horse.  He then takes a look around as sees if its possible to catch a glimpse of Goblin tracks and where they might lead?

Tara stops when the Druid stops, getting down from her horse about 15' away from him and watching the area for any sign of any movement.

Daergast finds what looks like goblin tracks going of the road just south of the bridge.  He follows them in the darkness, amazingly, and soon finds a whole set of them in a small area, as if they had done a dance there or something.  Also in that area is a number of coins, all of them copper pieces (maybe 200 in all?).  It seems the goblins didn't want to keep their copper pieces.

He also finds tracks just a bit to the south, leading back to the road.  On the road the tracks are lost.

Daergast heads back to the group.  "Hey, come take a look?  Can't make heads, or tails of it.  Unless they had a ways to go and no use with copper? What do you think?  The tracks lead back to the road and disappear."

Nico shakes his head.   If they were just discarding the copper, why even bother to get off the road.  Something else happened here, and perhaps the copper was a byproduct or an unwanted or unintended consequence.  Do you see any signs in the dirt of the box?

Daergast  circles a twenty five foot perimeter around the discarded coins trying to find some clue, or sign that would shed some light on the ordeal.

Daergast finds nothing except a rock, upon which the chest was likely sat while the coins were removed.  There are minute scuff marks on the rock which lead him to that hypothesis.

Daergast returns to the group and scratches his head.  Looks to the other and says "Up in the trees, hunh?  Well, the tracks lead back to the road and disappear.  Maybe if we walked the horses, two in each side we might find where they lead back in at."  

Is it easy to tell if there heading onwards, or back towards the village?

The tracks head east when they leave the road, but southwest when the rejoin the road.

Does it look as if the tracks might be heading in the direction of the Goblin village when they leave the road finally, or elsewhere?

The group is currently south of the goblin village, and of the entire swamp.  The tracks lead from the road east, and then west-southwest from the hiding place in the bushes .

Nico looks around, at the direction the footprints seem to indicate, Daergast, did we cross the river yet?  Could that be where they're headed?  Or how about that old manor house we heard about?

You all recall crossing a stone bridge about a quarter of a mile back.  There was not much forest back there - it starts around where you are now and continues alongside the road, on the southeast side.

Bug responds to Tara with a loud snore.  It seems he finds Daergast's horse so comfortable that he has succumbed to the Sandman, right there in the saddle.  His light fades out, and someone wakes him up.  One of the horses whinnies in the darkness.

"What! No!  I don't speak Goblin!" yells Bug.  "Where am I?"  In a moment he realizes where he is, and he casts another Light spell.

The group continues down the road looking for tracks in the dark, at the sides of the road.  You do not go too far, maybe a few hundred yards, when Daergast stops.  He smells a whiff of blood.  Looking to the right side, he sees what looks like a bloody arrow in the grass about thirty feet from the road.  Searching around that spot reveals more goblin tracks leading off to the northwest.  It looks like just one set of tracks.  

Inspection of the arrow shows that it is an arrow from a human sized bow; and it has blood all over it.

Shan rides his horse up into the long grass and says, "We'd best stick close.  Our horses need to see any obstacles or one may break a leg.  Daergast, you'll need to keep tracking on foot, right?  I'll be right behind you."

Daergast takes the lead following the tracks from atop his horse, but soon finds he must dismount to keep following.  The group travels over the windswept plain, though it is a quiet, windless night.  Moving northwest, with both Shan and Nico behind him, and Shan leading Daergast's horse with sleepy Bug atop, and finally Tara bringing up the rear.  In a short while you all come back to the Foxglove River, which heads west to the sea.  You are quite sure there are two sets of tracks now - two goblins.

At the river, the grassy plain drops off a few feet to a rocky, muddy and sandy riverbank which reaches about five more yards down to the river.  The tracks muddle around here for a while - they must have spent a while here wondering what to do, arguing, or calisthenics.  And the tracks do not seem to lead anywhere.  The rest of the group joins in, and Shan finds a stone with fresh mud smudged on it.  Daergast looks around that spot and indeed finds another set of tracks, going back onto the grass.

Soon, you find yourselves heading to a large tree, standing out alone in the field.  As you reach the edge of the clearing under the large oak, Daergast sees something under the tree.  It appears to be a small person.

Daergast Whispers  "Two people circle widely around the tree, to not be seen."  He then holds his finger to his lips in a universal sign for quiet for everyone to see.  Then he crouches low and motions for Tara to do the same and begins to crawl towards the tree.

Tara gives the Druid an incredulous look, then shrugs, and walks towards the tree, ready to draw her sword if the small person attacks.

Tara approaches the small goblin.  Though it's dark, you can see and hear it is still asleep.  It may have had quite a busy day.

Tara will squat down, reach out and grab it by the throat and pull it up.  If she can hold it by the throat with one hand, the other will hold onto its shoulder, so as not to choke it, if she cant hold it with one hand, she will stay squatting and hold it by the throat with both hands

The goblin awakes and his eyes open wide. 

Bug walks up to you both and says, "Look, he's injured.  We probably did that to him."  You can see he has two or three wounds on him from arrows.  He looks around, seeing a few of the members of your party, and starts shaking.

"Not rass humans!  Not rass, not rass!"  says the goblin innocently (though his smile does appear fake, if very large).  The goblin looks at Bug and starts laughing, and pointing at him, says, "Rass dat, put in waterhole!"  And he immediately stops laughing as he starts coughing.

The goblin's eyes widen as he protests, "NO!  I get you box!  I live, you get box.  Got gold, silver!  No swords, though, Reta lie.  Hah, Reta yell even when lie."

He looks into Tara's eyes and smiles a pathetic goblin smile.  Smiles should not be half that wide, nor smell half that bad.

The swamp is across the Foxglove River and a mile of windswept moors.  It's possible that "Reta" is going back there, but the tracks don't lead in that direction, initially at least.

Daergast will investigate and see if he can see if they eventually lead to the river, or to the swamp.  He looks for rocks a long the way to mark the prints and path. While they are still fresh.

"I'd like to mark these tracks while their fresh before heading back to the town." Says Daergast.

Horseback only if the path is large and well traveled.  Otherwise, Daergast stays on the ground.

There is no path.  The only path around here is between the Lost Coast Road (just north of the last bridge you crossed) to Foxglove Manor, but it's on the north side of the river.

So you walk your horses, following Reta's trail, and find the trail goes back to the river, and then continues west alongside the river.  If she was carrying the chest, perhaps she was going slowly and you might catch up to her soon, you hope.  You are all tired and cold, though not yet hungry, as you all filled up at the Rusty Dragon.

You follow the tracks along the river for a while, and then find they have disappeared.  The river is wider here, and therefore shallower, so she might have crossed at this point.

Or perhaps she was picked up by something airborne?  :-)
