Hello All,

In Degrees of Knowledge, the Notre Dame edition, p. 206 fn 98 Maritain
gives a reference to an article Elie Gagnebin and J. Maritain, "La
finalite en biologie", in a collection Questions Disputees. He
mentions lectures on hylomorphism and animism are also in
preparation.

Does anyone have a full citation for this work? Also, does anyone know
if the foreseen lectures were ever prepared. I'd like to get a hold of
them, but have had no luck tracking this down.

Thanks,

My goodness, Jason; wish I could help. If you succeed in this quest
please let me know; and best of luck.

Jason,

Sorry this took so long.

Maritain published "Philosopohie de l'organisme. Notes sur la function de
nutrition" in the Revue Thomiste, XLIII (July-Sept '37) 263-275; it
discusses nutrition from the viewpoint of hylomorphism. That article was a
lecture, and it refers to an earlier, apparently unpublished, lecture where
he argued that biological life requires substantial change. He published a
version of the latter argument in an addendum to the French version of one
of the chapters in Scholasticism and Politics, probably the article on
"Science and Philosophy" that was included in Quatre Essais sur l'spirit
dans sa condtion charnelle. The reason he didn't include the argument in
Scholasticism and Politics was that it critiqued Mortimer Adler, who was the
translator of that book. So if Quatre essais has an index, look up Adler in
it.

I am copying Greg Reichberg on this e-mail. He might have more info.

Best,

Jack

Pretty impressive, Jack. Hope you are well.

Consider to grab this one before the price goes up (it will be out in
Sept., but is considerably larger than envisioned at time of
"prepricing"):

Jason,

You might also want to check Maritain's substantial Preface to Hans Driesch,
La philosophie de l'organisme (Paris: Marcel Riviere, 1921).

John, Thanks for sending the kind remark to the whole group. But there
appears to be a mistake in the URL you sent. It gets me to Amazon, but then
I get an error message about an incorrect address. Jack
