Hi all

I finally got around to setting up a server for hosting JACL games. It
lives on a virtual machine at a data centre somewhere so it won't have
all the problems that laptop under my desk suffered. ;) If anyone has
a finished game they would like to host there just let me know, I'd be
happy to put it up there.

The address is http://178.79.180.203/ I'm still thinking about
registering a domain for it.

Regards,
Stuart

Hi Stuart,

cool! :-)

By the way: I dared to look into your games and by this way found out that the GUI mode seems to be completely broken. I tested this for The Holy Grail and The Bloody Guns. Every command results in a "A fiendishly clever move" response...

I noticed this by the way also for my own game and was about asking you for help but as it seems you have the same problem :-)

Hmmm...

It seems to work for me, although there are still problems I get with
the way the footer displays sometimes. It has to do with the way I use
parameters to select the interface, but I'll take a look into that
soon.

I wonder if the problem you are experiencing is a browser issue? What
do the URL and parameters look like when you issue a command? For
example, if I take the ball in The Bloody Guns I get:

http://178.79.180.203/fastcgi-bin/bloodyguns.jacl?verb.x=33&verb.y=12&verb=take&noun=+cricket+ball&user_id=34076-122

and the expected response that I take the ball.

Regards,
Stuart

Really strange.

Does a simple "Look" work for you?

It is
http://178.79.180.203/fastcgi-bin/bloodyguns.jacl?verb.x=50&verb.y=12&user_id=34076-122
in my browser and only gives the mentioned error message...

When I select your example URL from the email I get the correct response but not if I select the parameters/commands in the GUI...

I tried with Internet Explorer and Firefox. Only error message to "look" command (for example...)

Hi Thomas

I get the behaviour you describe in Firefox too. I had only been using
Chrome up until now. I'll have a look through and see what is causing
the problem in those browsers.

It looks like this was caused by the way browsers handle buttons of
type image. I've changed the buttons in webinterface.library to be
text buttons, which under OSX at least look a lot like the old images
anyway. In order to get them to look nice I had to change the value
from 'look' to 'Look' so I've also added the code to change the
players command to lower case before processing. The console JACL
always did this, not sure why the web version didn't. Anyway, let me
know what you think. This system has the advantage of being able to
translate the web interface to different languages without having to
create button images as well as easily add extra commands so it isn't
all bad. ;)

Yes! Looks really nice and works!
And it is a big advantage that you may translate the buttons now without having to create images for everyone!
That is turning problems into improvements :-)

Loads faster too!

I had a look under Windows and I noticed the buttons looked a little
plain but CSS lets you do things like set the colour and even have a
background image tiled behind the text.

Also, just to let you know, I didn't register a domain name in the end
but a friend of mine added a host to his so this machine can now be
accessed via http://jacl.animats.net
