Hope everyone is masked up and staying safe this summer! Earlier this summer, Molly Brown decided to forgo the season and
pivot our time towards racial justice work. Part of this commitment is educating ourselves on local race-related issues through a teach-in model. For each teach-in, we will pay someone from the community to develop a presentation and teach about an issue they or their organization work on (due to the emotional burden of teaching, Molly Brown players may be leading these sessions as well). When developing our structure for this season, we have had conversations on how to bring the larger ultimate community into this work and wanted to invite anyone (18+) in the Colorado ultimate community to any teach-ins we organize this year.
The first teach-in, Addressing Structural Racism in Denver’s Built Environment will be held Thursday, July 30th from 6:00-7:30 PM . This is a two-part series that will end in a Q&A with the speaker, Christina Contreras. Christina is an ultimate player & expert in urban planning, her bio and a description of the series is attached. The second part will likely be held two weeks from the 30th.
We believe fully that this work should be paid and are committing to paying the speaker what they are worth. For this, we have a dedicated an amount of our budget to go towards teach-ins. Still, in order to meet market demand for speaking engagements, we will need some community support. As such, each teach-in we will collect a sliding scale fee: $10-30 (or more) and tips afterward. The money collected will first go towards the speaker, then towards an organization of their choosing.
Here is a less-than-one-minute survey to collect information for the zoom invitation and $$ (long form link:
