Newbie here, getting my feet wet and some stuff isn't making sense.

I built a Virtual Studio device but am seeing latencies to virtual studio local server of 35 ms and to AWS local servers of 45ms. Based on this I'd like to local host a server on a pi but I'm new to pi and Linux.

I've seen the 2019 paper on loading jacktrip on a pi but even the OS listed there is several versions old. I like to keep OS up to date for security purposes. I'm amazed there isn't a copy of that paper online that gets updated every time any of those softwares gets revised. So, I don't know if that will work with new versions of the various software. Also, is 4gb, or 8gb pi required or recommended?

I see a lot of "load this version of X, not the latest version which is incompatible" everywhere, which makes me very nervous about getting too ambitious.

And then there is ASIO4ALL, but only a certain version. In my recording world ASIO4ALL is primarily regarded as a tool to add latency to sound card operations if you find that the native device ASIO drivers (Focusrite) don't give you enough latency to properly torture the recording artist! Maybe someone could write a driver to add latency to the HiFiBerry soundcard, only seems fair! So, can a device ASIO driver not be used, be used for some but not all software or be used only if a blood sacrifice is made?

I also find references to various GUIs in various places that do certain things, but require certain versions of software X, Y, and Z. Are these things all gathered together somewhere? Have you heard the term "wiki"?

I'm hoping that I just haven't found the fountain of knowledge that will help me figure out all of this. Please feel free to point me to it - I'm happy to do the work, but my Google foo is weak and I've spent days following a circular set of references that eventually link me back to where I started without answering my concerns

Apologies for that old doc (aged and ready for an archive -- it was placed there when we moved back to github in the ancient days of last Spring).

What should be there and updated in the INSTALL file is this info which worked last week both for an Ubuntu VM and for Raspbian/Debian:

[build tools]

sudo apt install -y --no-install-recommends build-essential qt5-default

[dependency]

sudo apt install libjack-jackd2-dev

[latest jacktrip]

git clone https://github.com/jacktrip/jacktrip.git

[go to src subdirectory]

cd jacktrip/src/

[start the build process]

./build

[go to build output directory]

cd ../builddir

[check version of new executable that's there -- should be v1.2.2] (that will change shortly to v1.3.0)

./jacktrip -v

I would also be thrilled to see a bit more of a recipe for a jack trip server in terms of which pi processor would be adequate for let's say 10 musician's. Which os. I would like to be able to deploy a PI server and make a copy of the MicroSD and replace that copy on a regular basis in case it gets hacked out at the DMZ.

Regarding asioall, is that even relevant for a jack trip server? Does it get involved in sound cards at all? Doesn't it get digital audio in through the network port and send assembled digital audio out?

Well, the ASIO was sort of a general question. As I've thought about this I have to consider that I presently have no partners in crime and those which I might recruit will probably be less knowledgeable than myself. So the idea of using all my pi s to make plug and play devices that I can use to demo to others is pretty appealing. In either case I may well end up with either a client or a server on Windows with a usb interface, so ASIO4ALL will be in play.

I'm looking at QJackTrip cause I'm old and remembering command line parameters is not going to happen!

Went here: https://ccrma.stanford.edu/software/jacktrip/windows/index.html

followed their link to download jack2 - it downloaded a version of jack1.9 from 2015 that bears no resemblance to the screen shots.

I manually went to git and downloaded jack2 and it doesn't have jack or jack control panel - just QjackCtl

Is there an actual procedure to install on Windows that works?

Weirdness follows me everywhere! It appears the stanford server is using buffer of 47721, while sampling at 22052 at 22 bits!

There’s some kind of conflict with port sharing in the code. Workaround is to Disable file sharing and re-enable after the sesh.

There is a conflict in the code with port sharing. Try disabling file and printer sharing.

I had read about the print and file sharing so I did turn those off and then the weird numbers from the server started to vary. I did not think to restart my pc after turning that off - I'll try that!

I had quite an advanced self-lesson on the connection screen of Jack, as my audio interface has 18 inputs and 20 outputs, so the connection also involves the software mixer native to the device

Rebooted, checked that print and file sharing was still off, and get the same crazy numbers from the server as I showed before. Brain is shutting down, so I'll scratch my head some more tomorrow.

Still no luck.
It is a personal laptop, so no need for (nonexistent) System Admins.
I have turned off all file and printer sharing, I have make an exception for jacktrip.exe in my AVG firewall, but still giving the same result. I'm thinking this must have come up before and had a fix.

Thought I would move this thread offlist and share two things:

1. Make sure to disable file sharing on both public and private
networks. Jacktrip needs a public connection with internet IPs.

2. Windows firewall and 3rd party security like McAfee and Norton can
cause these crazy print out of settings, which are not reflecting the
actual settings. Try adding Jacktrip to the specific security in use.

However, even after adding Jacktrip, in a number of support cases, the
user's computer settings required an admin to change them because the
machine came from an IT dept or other institutional or corporate source.

This is one of the gotchas. I hope it can be resolved and connect on
Jacktrip soon.

All,

I can't ping jackloop256.stanford.edu, so should I be able to use "-C jackloop256.stanford.edu" for jacktrip?

If I substitute the IP for a running jacktrip foundation server that I can ping, the results are the same (no connection, weird buffer size, sampling rate and bit resolution.

Why can't I ping the loopback server?

Yep, exactly what I did. Gave it full access and all incoming and all outgoing ports. Nothing changed.

did you specify port 4464? Clients don't usually need to do port
forwarding but you might need to with your security software.

I believe the "All" refers to standard network ports, of which 4464 is
not one. Also, both UDP and TCP need to be specified. Please just try

There is nowhere to specify in AVS for UDP or TCP

Specified port 4464 and said for other ports to ASK.

Ran jacktrip and got asked to allow jacktrip to connect to internet (didn't mention a port number) I allowed it and got new error message

thanks, but in the command line an uppercase -C is required for
connecting to a hub server.

regarding UDP and TCP - those will need to be set in your modem, but
again, usually not required for clients. Still, if your security is
getting in the way, why not try?

Found the packet rules that let me specify UDP/TCL for 4464.

Tried -C vs -c and no change - same error.

Stopped and restarted jackctrl and now it has no error but it says waiting for peer... and drops back to command line

I've followed your instructions and installed jacktrip on a pi with the intention of running a server on the pi.

Since it is a headless pi, qjackctl fails to launch. I assume all of this can be done from the command line. Where can I get the details of how to do that?

My main question is if I run a jacktrip server locally, does that machine also function as a client for me or do I need to run a separate machine as a client and connect to the server?

Ok, I've given up on Windows and trying to run a pi server locally and no joy so far.

First question, is does the pi I'm running the server on have to have a sound card? I assume a hub server (-S) doesn't because it isn't doing any DAC or ADC. But I assume a P2P server (-s) might because it will be converting. I'm trying to run a server on a plain pi with no added sound card, and neither is working.

In qjackctl, I assume I leave the driver as alsa? Also, it won't run with buffer less than 512?

Running P2P locally (-s) on my pi - turn on Virtual studio machine, go to website, create Server "Home P2P", enter my external IP address and connect machine to server - jacktrip is waiting for connection from client - website says my machine has connected and starts reporting ping time of <1ms. Meanwhile can't hear anything on my Virtual studio machine, so not connected

Running Hub server locally, I get

UDP base port set to 61001

Waiting for client connection

Client connection received

Reading UDP port from client

Client UDP Port is = 4464

Sending Final UDP Port to Client: 61002

Client TCP Connection closed

This also indicates on the website that it is connected and shows ping times >1ms

Any ideas cheerfully accepted

Just a side note on ASIO4ALL:

And then there is ASIO4ALL, but only a certain version. In my recording world ASIO4ALL is primarily regarded as a tool to add latency to sound card operations if you find that the native device ASIO drivers (Focusrite) don't give you enough latency to properly torture the recording artist!

Not sure if this was meant as sarcasm.... ASIO4ALL is used primarily with soundcards that don't provide a native asio driver. It uses native Windows drivers in exclusive/low-latency mode and exposes them as ASIO devices. If a dedicated ASIO driver is available for a given soundcard, it typically is the recommended choice.

Maybe someone could write a driver to add latency to the HiFiBerry soundcard, only seems fair!

ASIO drivers are present on Windows only, so they don't apply to HiFiBerry.

So, can a device ASIO driver not be used, be used for some but not all software or be used only if a blood sacrifice is made?

Dedicated ASIO drivers should be used for low-latency audio on Windows. If a dedicated ASIO driver is not available, ASIO4ALL is the next best thing.

Regarding Windows (I haven't tried JackTrip on Windows myself):

From https://ccrma.stanford.edu/software/jacktrip/windows/index.html - the driver should be Portaudio. Buffer size is taken from the ASIO driver - ASIO4ALL defaults to 512 I believe, can be changed in ASIO4All control panel.

As I wrote earlier - use a dedicated ASIO driver if available.

Let me repeat -- I have given up on Windows, all my efforts are now on raspberry pi.

The results I reported are for running either a P2P or a hub server on a pi. Do I leave the device as alsa if I'm trying to run a server on a naked pi with no added soundcard?

Almost everyone reading this will know more about networks and jacktrip than me - do those messages give any hint of what my problem is on a pi?

In my humble opinion, trying to learn all about audio software on a new operating system *and* wrangle hardware and software drivers all at the same time is a losing proposition. Still licking my wounds here...

Much better to build on the success of others. If you want to use an RPi to build a low-latency audio bridge, I would start with the jambox image - it includes a simple way to get to a UI, and pre-configured Jamulus and Sonobus clients. If you want to run jacktrip, that is also installed, and you can easily add a jamtrip package to provide a UI for that.

Alternatively, you could run jacktrip or Jamulus on the Virtual Studio platform, also quite easy to get up and running.

Unless you're a hobbyist in search of a real challenge, you are in for more than a little frustration if you're trying to build a working RPi solution from scratch. Save yourself the trouble, so you can focus on making music.

I agree with a lot of the above, regarding lots of moving parts at once. NEVER try to tune a motorcycle with 4 carburetors.

However, we've thus far had success with building our own JackTrip Virtual Studio devices, and registering ALL of them to ME. I can then control from one place whether tonight we connect to a foundation Managed Server, or someone's Jamulus server, or our own Jamulus server, or, if I ever get it running our own JackTrip server. I have corralled all the complexity into my space and away from our singers. There is simply not a chance that I'd have had this much success if I had to get everyone to swap microSD cards and stuff.
