Maybe the JACK server is not running?

So I tried to do the whole thing manually: I launched qjackctl, configured it for 256/48000, and ran jacktrip from the command line. It worked! Except she got lots of white noise, and I realized that I forgot to configure ASIO::ASIO4ALL v2 as the Interface. Once I did that, it failed even from the command line. The qjackctl messages window shows

That last line seems suspiciously similar to the second line I quoted above from the JamTrip log, a line that does not appear when I run JamTrip on my own PC. qjackctl status is as though the server is running, and the ASIO icon appears in my system tray, but jacktrip can't see a server.
So JamTrip and the manual approach are consistent here.
Has anyone run into this failure before? Any ideas on things to try?
