I'm trying to run Jacktrip on a Windows 7 and an OSX machine but they never connect to each other.  I'm used it with an OSX to OSX machine before, but I'm hoping I can use it between OSX and Windows.  Does anyone know if there's any reason why they're not seeing each other?

On the OSX machine, I run Jackpilot, then in a command window run jacktrip -c IPADDRESS

On the Windows Machine, I run Jack PortAudio, Jack Control, and then in a command window run jacktrip -s

I get no error messages.  The OSX machine just says waiting for peer indefinitely. The Windows machien doesn't say anything.

I'm not a programmer and find it all pretty frustrating trying to find all the right components and install them. But I think I've installed everything right now. I'm aware of the benefits of Jacktrip having used it in a live concert setting.  Would be great if I could get it all going!

Hi, as far as I know Jacktrip works only for Mac and Linux, not for Windows.

Best,

I'm not sure whether you're saying that Jacktrip is not available for windows, or only works cross-platform between OSX and Linux.  To be clear, Jack Trip is available for windows.  I don't know where I originally found this, but here's the link to the download - https://ccrma.stanford.edu/~jcaceres/tmp/jacktrip-windows/.

Hi Rich,

I share your interest in putting Jacktrip on Windows.  Ideally OSX and Windows users should be able to play together.  It’s a pleasant surprise for me to learn that Jacktrip is available for Windows.  It’s certainly not advertised much.

Anyway I’ve got a MAC and a Windows computer and will try hooking them up as you suggest.  I’ll let you know what happens.

I e-mailed one of the main devs yesterday who said that it should work between Windows and OSX. Apparently Jacktrip was ported to Windows by an intern about 3 years ago and hasn't updated it since. That's probably the reason they don't publicize it.  I'm not holding out a whole lot of hope.  He suggested I first try to verify the UDP path using jperf or iperf, but I can't figure these programs out or even figure out if there is a version for Windows.  I guess if I run it from OSX, I don't need a windows version....  hmmm.  I'm not a programmer/developer, and don't really have a whole lot of time to invest into this at the moment (lots of tech to install for fall semester, and I'm a one man band!!!).

When I run jacktrip, Jack PortAudio throws up two error messages - CheckRes error and CheckRead error.  I don't know what these mean or how to get past them.

I'm not sure what to do, it would be really nice if it were working, but too much else to do right now. Maybe I'll get a chance to revisit in the fall when everything else has settled down. Might even be worth me investing in a couple of jamlinks instead. Although I'm not a programmer/developer, I'm also not a technophobe like some of the people we will be working with are. I suspect jamlink may be the be the only way to make this usable by the people we want to work with.

Would still be interested in knowing if it works for you John.  Do you have much experience with Jacktrip?  My only experiences are with the developer at Stanford when we did a live improv session, and all I had to do was install it, and run it. Anything else going on, they did at the other end.  So I'm somewhat lost.

Hi Rich,

We unfortunately don't have a developer on board that can keep the
windows version current. We constantly test the OS X and Linux version
but we don't have the expertise to do the Windows one. If anyone
volunteers to take on that task, we could certainly release an official
version.

That being said, I may still be able to help if you send the complete
error output from the terminal.

All the best,
JPC

hello
Windows version requires jackd-s in the path (this is in the read me) Also you will need a device that jack see's, The latest version may have issues getting devices to appear
if thats the case you should use one of the older versions (1.96)

That said, i have used the Windows version many times and with some luck it works ....

Hello,

I’ve been trying to get this working between an IMAC  and a Windows 7 machine.

I was able to get the two machines to claim that they were connected, however I didn’t hear any audio being transferred.

One interesting piece of software is in the Windows Jacktrip package.  It is called Nusic and provides a quick way to set up

the jacktrip parameters.  (Similar to qjackctl but a good bit simpler to use.)

So I didn’t get much further than you did Mark.  I may try again depending on how busy I am.  We’re interested in playing Irish

Music together over the web.  Being able to incorporate Jamlinks, Macs, Wintel machines, and Linux would allow the most

Participation.

One disadvantage to using the Jamlink along with computers running Jacktrip is that only one setting of bit rate and packet size is allowed.

Not being able to adjust those is a real handicap in the real world.

Let me know if you hear anything else.

John Hamilton

Hi
An even simpler option and works incredible...soundjack.eu

Its free, constantly being developed, works on MAC/WIN and Linux

Works great as a jack client. Mac to Win no problem

Very low latency, great quality including stereo @ 192 kbps and uncompressed Linear
In fact, its probably the best option on the planet. Supports low latency @ 128 net packets and driver buffer

Created by Pro Alex Carrot

Its far far far far far better than trying to use jack as a remote p2p jamming client

Just download it, launch it, configure with your soundcard and or jack (I use it with M-Audio device, Logic and jack
all at the same time.

Best regards
Mark
