I’m having a problem connecting with the NowNet Arts Ensemble jacktrip server after installing version 1.3. I could hear the session but they couldn’t hear me.

I uninstalled 1.3 and reinstalled 1.2.1 and the problem was still there. The correct version was verified and all the settings were verified- frame rate, sample rate, correct audio device settings, no other programs running and it worked correctly with Zoom and Sonobus. I rebooted the computer and did the same check with the local speaker and microphone, same issue.

Sarah thought it may that be something from version 1.3 is left over that is keeping the older jacktrip version on the NowNet Arts server from connecting properly with. Y session.

Any suggestions?

Hi Jon,

When you wrote this -

> I rebooted the computer and did the same check with the local speaker and microphone, same issue.

- do you mean that even without starting any jacktrip session, if you start jack only, setting it to use your audio interface, and route capture 1 to playback 1, you don't hear anything?

If so, then I'd think there's an issue with jack specifically, not (necessarily) jacktrip. I'd suggest testing jack locally (without jacktrip), first with just built in audio then with your interface, to make sure you can route audio both in/out properly.

Updating jacktrip shouldn't have required changing jack, so if you had a working version of jack earlier before the 1.3 jacktrip upgrate, I'm not sure what could have caused this problem. But whatever it might be, I'd suggest working from the ground up, first getting jack to work properly locally, then considering possible jacktrip issues.

I'm not sure of how you start jack by itself on a mac.  I've always started qjackctl and than add the address in terminal.  The message in qjackctrl looks like the ports are connecting.    I used the NowNet Arts server address in Terminal to connect and was able to hear everyone and see the connections.  The connection to the server looked good but they never heard me.

Hi Jon,

When you hit the start button in Qjackctl, it starts Jack. What I'm suggesting is that after doing that, but *before* entering a jacktrip command in Terminal, you do the following:

In the Qjackctl window, click "Connections." In the new window that opens, click the triangles next to "system" on the left and right, so you can see the "capture" (inputs) and "playback" (outputs) on each side. (Those are the inputs/outputs for whatever interface you set in the interface menu in Qjackctl "setup" window.) Assuming you have a mic plugged into your input 1 on the interface, then on the left, click once to select "capture 1" and then on the right click once to select "playback 1" and then click the "connect" button at the bottom left of the window. This will draw a line beteween capture 1 and playback 1 and then you should be able to hear whatever you send into input 1 on your interface played back through your output 1 (your left ear on the headphone outs).

If you don't hear yourself back that way, something is wrong with Jack, and it might not have anything to do with Jacktrip.

If you do get the expected results testing locally like that, but the server isn't getting your audio once you connect on jacktirp, then the next step is to troubleshoot jacktrip...

I can hear myself and messages have born that out from the other times I've tried.  What are tests for jacktrip?

Maybe Bonnie or someone more familiar with the 1.3 version will have an idea about what could be going wrong (I haven't used it yet). But one thing to do is next time you connect to Sarah's server, add -V to the command (verbose output) and ask her to do the same, and if the problem happens again you can both send the terminal readout which will give more information. Sorry that's not much help but if you send that, maybe it'll offer some clues.

Hi Jon,

You could try the same loopback server from New Year's Eve--not the server for the party, but the test server.  If I remember correctly, you were also experiencing audio problems then.  It should be in our message history, but I can message you privately if you've lost the address of the server.  When you connect to it, you should be able to hear yourself and hear a clapping track.

Bonnie
