Hi all,

I'm working with two other musicians and we're trying to get JackTrip up and running. Two of us (myself and my clarinetist) have a JackTrip device and have successfully connected to a JackTrip managed server - it works wonderfully.

However, our 3rd musician, the flutist, does NOT have a physical JackTrip device. Based on his research, he thinks he can use his Mac and the JackTrip software to emulate a JackTrip device. BUT he cannot connect to the JackTrip managed server that I've set up.

So, we're going to try setting up an unmanaged server (I'll try this on my laptop). There don't seem to be any instructions anywhere on how to do this - can someone who's done this before point me in the right direction (I"m sure there's documentation somewhere, I just can't seem to find it)??

Many thanks in advance,

Tony

How is he trying to connect to the managed server? Did he install JACK audio and the open source version of Jacktrip?

the reason I ask is because after installing JACK, and the open source
command line version of the Jacktrip app on a computer, it is simple for
that computer to connect to a managed server on the Jacktrip website.

After starting a managed server on the Jacktrip website, in order for a
computer running JACK audio, as well as the open source command line
version of the Jacktrip app, that computer would first start JACK, then
in the terminal type:

jacktrip -C <ip address of server> <enter>

The uppercase C indicates connection to a hub server vs. the lower case
-c which is for peer-to-peer connections. The ip address of the server
will be found in the upper right corner of the managed server after it
has been started and is "Ready".

The unmanaged server is really just a reference to the Jacktrip server
you would set up on your laptop. The Jacktrip unmanaged server allows
those with Virtual Studio devices to connect to your laptop server via
the unmanaged server on the Jacktrip website. Your laptop server would
need to have the resources to support those who are connecting to it.

Maybe you already know all of this, but I am thinking out loud here and
hope it helps in some way.

Yes, he installed the software and was essentially trying to figure out a way to make his Mac emulate a JackTrip device (it has all the ports needed, so theoretically he should just be able to connect it to a microphone, headphones, and the internet - via a hard-wired RJ45 connection to his router - and have it mimic the device). But that doesn't seem to be working with one of JT's managed servers, so we were wondering if that could be made to work with a private/unmanaged server.

Thank you!

Tony

Hi Tony,

> and have it mimic the device

No, it doesn’t mimic the device - it works a bit differently. If you want to use jacktrip on a “regular” computer, there are guides here:

https://help.jacktrip.org/hc/en-us/categories/360004467834-Open-Source-JackTrip

If you want to connect to a managed server, note the section on this page about where to find the IP of the server once it’s started:

https://help.jacktrip.org/hc/en-us/articles/360053416674-Managing-Audio-Servers

"Once the server is ready to use, its icon will change to green and its state will transition to "Running." In addition, the IP address and port number for the server will be displayed underneath its name. Anyone using JackTrip (or Jamulus if that is the server type) clients should be able to use these values to connect to it. “

To do that, use the hub client command as explained in some of those guides linked above (jacktrip -C IP…)

It’s definitely not as simple to use a regular computer, compared with the VS devices, so it might take time to figure it all out, but if you hit a problem please provide the details here and someone can probably help.

Best,

Michael
