Hi folks,
Had a working install of Jacktrip 1.1 with Jack 0.92b3 on OS X High Sierra. I upgraded to Jacktrip 1.3.0 and Jack 1.9.17 and get the error message in the title:

Jack itself seems to work fine, can route audio around and generate feedback, but Jacktrip throws a fit when trying to start up and connect to Jack. The error occurs whether or not Jackd is already running when Jacktrip is started.

The readout is below, grateful for any help.

Responding here as well:

I think I saw this error before, when I had two versions of Jack installed (namely JackOSX and the new Jack2).
Jack2 installer does not remove JackOSX, AFAIU.
I'd suggest removing both Jacks (removing old JackOSX might require searching for files manually).
I'm pasting a tentative list of files to remove JackOSX (proceed at your own risk ;)
After removing both Jack versions, install current jack2 and use jacktrip 1.3.

Best,
Marcin

thanks. i recognise most of these files from a jackosx uninstalling script I found and ran, but I will have another go. Is there any other way you know of to detect residual jackosx installation, aside from the presence of the error I'm getting?

SOLVED.

Thanks Marcin. The JackOSX uninstall script does not catch everything. I had to manually generate the locate db, then run 'locate jack' to find everything, and delete manually everything except man pages. Then installed Jack2 and Jacktrip 1.3.0 and no problem.

I am getting a similar result.  Running jackd 1.9.17 with jacktrip 1.3.0

Started Qjackctl, then used Qjacktrip to run a hub server , then tried to connect via terminal.

I've also tried having others connect with Qjacktrip as hub clients, and though I don't have their full error screen, they did get the  same "Maybe the JACK server is not running?
Exiting JackTrip..."

Is this maybe caused by the same Jack versions problem.  We are all running on Macs - I have Big Sur, they have Catalina.

If so, and I have to try the same manual file deleting steps, could you please interpret this for me:  "I had to manually generate the locate db, then run 'locate jack' to find everything, and delete manually everything except man pages."

I've been looking into the uninstall (for mac) problem. It helps me to know that `default' server already active might be a symptom of having two jack versions installed. I have made a shell script that removes all known files from v0.92 and v1.9.11. OP John, if you found any files not noted here could you let me know?

Thanks,
Tim

for tim: that looks good but I'm afraid I don't recall every single one I deleted and didn't make a list. But it certainly included panda, and every file returned by 'locate jack' except for files which were clearly man pages, source code.

for david: https://osxdaily.com/2011/11/02/enable-and-use-the-locate-command-in-the-mac-os-x-terminal/ something like this although it may be different on later OS X's, that will show you were to start. 'locate' is a terminal command used like 'locate jack', but which first requires the locate database to be created/updated. My procedure was to create the database, then run locate jack, and carefully look through it deleting every single file that was anything to do with jack. Go carefully because in theory I guess you might have other software that contains jack as part of its name. and man pages are just documentation files, so I didn't bother deleting those. I then reinstalled jack and jacktrip.

your problem looks different to mine so I've no guarantee this deep-uninstallation sort of method will be helpful.

David,

JACK is the program that's failing in your case.  You may get more help if you repost this issue with all the details (e.g. JACK, QJackCtl and JackTrip version numbers and the full console output) to the JACK audio mailing list: jack...@lists.linuxaudio.org.

What we found in my group was when we got that error message "Maybe Jack server is not running" what was going on was that although we thought we had removed earlier versions of Jack, there were still remnants around, causing conflict.  With Aaron's help, we removed all the jack files, and then reinstalled Jack2.
Can't say as I could do it again on my own, though.....
