September, ten years earlier: Six-year-old Regina goes with Cora to town, where Cora forbids Regina from playing marbles with the other children. In tears, Regina later confides in her father Prince Henry, who tells her a story about a kind old man who feeds a poisonous snake every day, even though he almost dies from its poison, though Regina does not understand the story.
February, six years earlier: Shortly after turning ten, Regina and Cora are on the way home from seeing a royal play with their coachman Hector. Cora goes on about how Regina one day be queen, but Regina only expresses interest in ice skating with the other children. Cora surprisingly stops their carriage to ask the children to lend Regina some ice skates, but after they all decline, Regina is sent back to her carriage and as they depart, the ice of the frozen island begins to crack, presumably the result of Cora's magic.
July, four years earlier: The servant Rainy does twelve-year-old Regina's hair as she prepares to go riding. Regina and Prince Henry happily go horse riding, however their horse Hwin panics and throws Regina to the ground, scarring her upper lip. She is treated by Giles Spencer, a doctor and her father's friend. Cora heals the scar, and Regina suffers from nightmares about her experience. Regina sneaks off in the night, wanting to ride Hwin again, though their stable boy Jesse reveals that the horse has mysteriously died, presumably at the hands of Cora.
February, three months earlier: Regina meets the artist Jasper B. Holding for the first time as he paints her. Weeks later, Jasper delivers the portrait, and an impressed Regina asks him to teach her how to paint. Regina nervously asks Cora if it is alright, and she agrees. On their first lesson, Regina paints her beloved horse Rocinante.
May 5: Sixteen-year-old Regina is locked in her bedroom by Cora, and let out by Prince Henry for tea an hour later. Regina is surprised to meet their guest, Claire Fairchild, the niece of Prince Henry's close friend Giles Spencer. Regina and Claire instantly get along, and Cora tells them the story of how she almost married the infamous King Leopold. To Regina's suprise, Claire defends her when Cora chastises her daughter.
May 6: Regina sees Claire again and invites her riding; Claire helps Regina pick a lone apple from its tree. Claire later tells Regina about how her uncle Giles, when he was fourteen, he saved King Leopold's royal doctor from the sea. When the royal doctor passed, Giles took over. Regina and Claire go riding on the horses Rocinante and Opal. They stumble across a blind woman, who asks for a ride back to her home. The girls are fascinated to discover that the blind woman lives in a Gingerbread House, and the woman invites them inside. Claire is eager, but Regina is skeptical. Regina convinces Claire to leave, but the woman reveals herself to be a witch and angrily takes Claire's deceased brother's ring. Claire is desperate to retrieve it, but Regina says they must think it over first. On the way home, Regina admits to Claire that she wouldn't mind having some magic to stand up to her mother.
May 8: Two days later, Regina and Claire reunite. They head off to the market, where Claire seems to be on edge, claiming to feel uneasy in crowds. When a little boy attempt to steal some bread only to be caught and beat, Regina wants to help and Claire somehow starts a distracting fire. As the girls flee, Regina cannot believe that Claire has magic, which she admits she dabbles in. Claire agrees to teach Regina. Later, Regina visits Claire at Giles's home. After bonding some more, Claire begins to teach Regina magic. Regina pictures a moment that made her angry; when her mother locked her away three days ago. However, the magic fails to work.
May 9: Regina meets Jasper for her painting lesson, where she gifts him the apple that she had picked. Regina eagerly shows her painting of the orchard to Cora, but she insults Regina and the artwork. Regina and Claire later resume their magic lessons, where Regina apparently manages to telekinetically push a frog off its lilypad.
May 16: A week later, Regina makes no process in magic despite her daily lessons. Regina asks Jasper for a stroll or horseback ride, but he declines because he was hired to merely teach her painting. They do, however, agree to "accidentally" see each at the upcoming ball held by King Leopold and Queen Eva. When Claire arrives, Regina finds herself jealous when her best friend flirts with Jasper. Regina shoos Claire away, and Cora mistakes Regina and Jasper's lesson for intimacy; Cora promptly fires Jasper, leaving Regina heartbroken. An angry Regina unsuccessfully tries to use magic on Cora. At teatime, Cora reveals to Claire that she was once a tavern girl.
May 20: It is the day of the royal ball, and Cora hopes for Regina to meet her future husband. At the ball, Regina witnesses a tense, yet civil, interaction between her mother and Queen Eva. Eva compliments Regina, and even suggests a future husband for her; Prince Benjamin. Regina and Claire meet up, and cross paths with Prince Benjamin. Cora urges Benjamin to ask Regina to dance, which he does so after reminiscing on his two failed marriages. However, Regina is not fond of him
With just a few games, the AMCC is still pretty open. Alfred State opened with a sweep of Mount Aloysius but that is the spread in the conference standings. Two more teams have already hit the 10 win mark in Pitt-Greensburg and Hilbert and these are the top teams with a month to go in the season.
After the 2022 season that Immaculata had, more was expected from the Mighty Macs in 2023 in the AEC. The slow start they had is just an early spring memory. A top spot in the standings and a big win over TCNJ has Immaculata right where they want to be. Following Immaculata is Cabrini and Marywood who are also having good season.
The two top teams in the ARC are Luther and Buena Vista. The Norse and Beavers will be fighting for that number one spot and the advantage in the ARC tournament. Before the season started, we expected this to be anyone's race and it is turning out just as expected with any team being able to pull out an upset.
The ASC is shaping up to be a dogfight with most of he conference season is already played. Eastern Texas Baptist is leading the standings with its experienced squad. The only other teams with .500 or above records are Texas-Dallas and Concordia-Texas but well off the pace.
The C2C will be playing in Pool B this year but it might surprise nobody that Salisbury has the best record of the three teams. Neither is the success that Christopher Newport has had but Mary Washington is having one of their best season in recent memory. The first conferences we reviewed will in all likelihood send one team to the playoffs but all three members of the C2C can easily find themselves heading to Regionals in mid-May.
Johns Hopkins is the top dog in the CC in 2023. They have a top 5 spot in the polls and wins over many teams we expect to see regionally ranked at the end of the month. The real surprise is that Franklin and Marshall and Swarthmore have underperformed to this point in the season. The Diplomats have turned things around and expect them to battle for the top spot. Swarthmore still have time to right the ship but that time is now.
Endicott tops the CCC with a couple series already in the books. No surprise here as they are a top contender for the national trophy. Roger Williams follows the Gulls in the standings but with a nearly perfect record in conference and a sub .500 record in their non-conference schedule. Salve Regina and Western New England are wining at a pretty good clip so one might expect to see all four in the end of the season tournament.
Well that was unexpected in the start of CCIW play. The umpteenth-time winning Cardinals from North Central were expected to be at the top of the standings in early returns but a sweep by Wheaton (Ill.) has a conference in disarray. NCC is too good of a team to stay in the basement so expect them to rise steadily through the month. Augustana also has a powerhouse team this year and what was expected to be a battle for supremacy between the top teams are now a push to improve their standing. It is still early but the one team near the top of the standings with staying power is Millikin.
It was expected to see LaGrange with a perfect CCS conference record but with most teams having played three series, the race is between The Panthers and the Belhaven Blazers. Belhaven won their first nine games and top the standings, having been on a tear now for weeks. One team that one thought would be there from their great start is Maryville (Tenn.). The Scots opened with 12 straight wins but since then the wins have come few and far between. Huntingdon is having a good season and come tournament time, they can play the role of spoiler.
Ho-hum, it is Keystone topping the CSAC. We have hear that many times before and no matter the conference lineup, the Giants stand tall. A .500 record shows that they are vulnerable and right behind them are the Wilson Phoenix. This year might be the time for Wilson but we will know when they play head-to-head with Keystone. Getting the top seed in the CSAC tournament will be key in either team coming out with the conference's automatic playoff bid.
The CUNYAC has made the most of the Pool A bids, using an alliance with the NAC to pave a path to the playoffs but the adage that if you can succeed in New York, you can succeed anywhere does not hold for this New York City conference.
I would be crazy to say we did not expect St. John Fisher to top the early standings but it has not been an easy non-conference schedule. The Cards must be happy to be back in Empire 8 play as their record in conference is remarkably different than that outside the E8. Utica is the only other team with a plus .500 record in regular season so expect come playoff time to see St. John Fisher, once again making an appearance.
