When I create a sequence with 9 beats per measure (i.e. 9/8), I have
to crank the BPM way down to around 30 in order to hear it at a decent
tempo. It seems like BPM is actually being interpreted as "measures
per minute" or something, rather than "beats per minute." Which kind
of makes sense since there's no place to specify what the "beat" is
(i.e. how many beats per measure). But it's a bit weird to work with.

Oh yes I know.. There is a ticket about this:
http://jackbeat.samalyse.org/ticket/4

The truth is that measures aren't really measures in Jackbeat. They are beats,
understood as in BPM. And the number of beats is badly named too: it's the total
number of *steps* in the pattern. So basically, the "measure" parameter
indicates the number of steps per beat, and allow to increase or decrease the
precision of the grid.

This is a historical design problem, due to my lack of experience when I started
the Jackbeat project, many years ago, and also to my tracker oriented approach
at that time.

I'll try to fix this at some point in time. In the meantime, patches are welcome ;)
