Fetih 1453 was released on 15 February 2012 at 14:53 local time. The film was released in different countries on 16 February 2012, including United States, the United Kingdom, France, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Germany, the Netherlands, Macedonia, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Bangladesh,[10] South Korea, Japan and several others. Universal Studios have expressed an interest in acquiring the distribution rights to the film.[11] The film was released on Blu-ray October 2, 2012.[12]

The film only depicts the ethnically Turkish element of the Ottoman army. In reality, the Ottoman army was very diverse, including many Balkan converts to Islam as well as Christian levies and the armies of the Sultan's Christian and Muslim vassals.[18] The Ottoman Empire also engaged in a series of conquests in the previous decade, subjugating the Serbian Despotate and defeating Hungary at the Battle of Varna. The Eastern Roman Empire by 1450 was a shadow of its former self, having shrunk to a few square kilometers outside of Constantinople itself. The city was impoverished and depopulated, and by 1453 consisted of a series of walled villages separated by vast fields surrounded by the 1000 year old Theodosian walls. Eastern Roman Emperor Constantine XI rejected Ottoman overtures to surrender, fearing a massacre by Turkish forces. The final capture of the city also omits the day of pillaging that Mehmed allowed his soldiers, with Mehmed simply sparing the inhabitants instead.[19]

Film description: In 1453, the Byzantine capital of Constantinople is surrounded by Ottoman Turks. The city is but a shadow of its former glory due to the empire's ever receding coffers, while the Ottoman Empire continues to grow rich. After years of tolerating the existence of Byzantium, the ambitious sultan, Mehmet II launches his campaign to end the Byzantine Empire and take Constantinople for the Ottomans, resulting in arguably the greatest siege of that age.

Before Mehmed II set out from Edirne to Kunstantiniyya, he had the vanguard troops fix the roads. The gigantic cannon, which had started its journey from Edirne, was being pulled by 30 carts and 60 water buffaloes. Together, with other canons the most advanced firearms of the era were brought in front of the Istanbul walls. Mehmed II himself left Edirne on March 23, 1453 and reached the walls of Istanbul at the beginning of April. The Byzantines, who had been aware for a long time that their capital city was under threat, began a grand preparation to defend their city. Meanwhile, they received soldiers, equipment and weapons from Venice, Genoa and from some other Christian states; however, these were not enough.51 On April 2 the Venetian Bartolomeo Soligo prevented ships from entering the inner harbor by pulling a chain across the entrance of the Golden Horn. There were 17 ships, 3 Danube galleys, 2 small Venetian galleys and 5 unarmed galleys belonging to Emperor Constantine, as well as some large and small cargo ships in the harbor. On April 2, the Ottoman vanguards appeared in front of the city walls. Everything was planned so that the siege would be completed by April 6 Friday, which was a holy day for the Muslims. It is clearly stated in the fetihname that the siege began on 26 Rabi al-Awwal (April 6).52

After the first light of the day, the Ottoman soldiers began to move through the streets of the city. Although the date given for the fall of the city in the Ottoman sources is inaccurate, it is meaningless to try to ascertain another date based on the information in these sources. The information that the Turkish forces entered the city on Tuesday 20 Jumada al-awwal 857 / 29 May 1453 is clearly stated in the fetihnames or other official sources of this great event is in keeping with the dates given in the Byzantine and Latin sources. This shows how useless debates in this respect are. Similarly, some Ottoman historians, like İbn Kemal, also indicate the same date.

The Turks' excited embrace of their Ottoman heritage was most recently demonstrated by the millions of people who flocked to the movie theaters to see "1453," though this is not a pure "return to the past." Rather, the rising Ottomania is laden with contemporary accretions, such as consumerism and political neo-Ottomanism.

Subsequently, neo-Ottomanism is becoming the political lens through which many Turks view world politics. "The Conquest 1453" best exemplifies this trend. Armed with plenty of artistic license, including an imaginary Turkish female chief engineer whose skills help the Ottomans breech the walls of Constantinople, the movie casts Ottomans and contemporary Turks as a superior but tolerant people, enjoying their global power status.

After two hours of fighting between medieval Turks and Greeks, "1453," nevertheless, ends with a contemporary, albeit neo-Ottomanist, political message. Having just conquered Istanbul from the Greeks, victorious Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II marches into the Aya Sofya, hugs a little Christian girl, and promises a grand message of "a world of Muslim-Christian coexistence, to be managed by the Turks." The French paper Le Figaro also sees the film as confirming the rise of political Ottomanism, saying, "The huge enthusiasm for this epic [film] is an indication of the wave of Ottomania that has affected Turkey in recent times."
