Dear Harry and the JaamSim Development Team,

My name is Danilo, and I am a student under Professor Cristiano at UFOP, Brazil. First, I would like to thank you for how quickly you always support our academic community and implement the feedback sent by my classmates, Willian and Gabriel.

I am writing to suggest adding an update notification system to the software. Currently, only users who constantly check the website or closely follow the forums find out when a new version is released.

I understand that because JaamSim runs as a portable .jar file, a fully automated background installation might be unfeasible. However, having a simple built-in version checker would be a huge quality-of-life improvement. It could feature:

  1. A button to download the new executable/JAR file directly into the user's current directory, OR

  2. A direct link to the download platform, which would also help increase the website's visibility and traffic.

This would easily keep students and professionals up-to-date with the latest bug fixes without breaking their workflow.

Thank you again for your continuous hard work on this incredible software!

Best regards,

Danilo Cabral, UFOP - Brazil

While I agree this would be helpful, we've in some ways been very
intentional that jaamsim is self-contained and doesn't phone-home or
really make any kind of network requests. This has been helpful in
getting it certified in some environments that are very security
conscious. I'm not saying this isn't something we would consider, just
some context into the overall design thinking that has been done over
time, this is also part of why jaamsim does not require any
installation, as the exe and jar files are completely self-contained
(other than needing java available).

Cheers,

Harvey
