We've missed you and there will be a lot to see

We're Getting Ready for You!
Our Doors Are Opening **August 23**
We are so happy to be able to welcome you back to the Rare Book Department in person in a few weeks.

We hope you'll come enjoy some new-to-us (and new-to-you) books on display as well as popular favorites and also our copious air conditioning in these hot summer days. Visit us Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. starting August 23.

August 23 marks a return to all of our services in the Rare Book Department. Make a research appointment! Come to our 11AM tour! Visit our gallery exhibits! But as we know: things may change so please check our website or give us a call at 215-686-5416 to confirm. Our next major exhibition opens September 1 so it won't be long until the full breadth of the third floor is your oyster :)

And as always, when appropriate we make recordings of our public programs freely available on our YouTube page! Give it a follow.

EXHIBITION OPENING SEPTEMBER 1
For the Greatest Number: The New Deal Revisited
We're thrilled to announce our latest exhibition, For the Greatest Number: The New Deal Revisited. It takes a thematic look at the art and artifacts created by New Deal workers that shaped the infrastructure, morale, and myth of the United States - and what we can learn from the national crisis of ninety years ago as we face our own today.

The exhibit will open in the William B. Dietrich Gallery on the 3rd floor of Parkway Central on September 1, but there's a lot more to an exhibition than the gallery!

Programs will include a virtual cooking demo on historic foodways (fridge pickles!), in-person screen-printing workshops at locations around the city, a talk about herbal remedies from the 1930s, and a panel discussion on what a new New Deal should be.

We'll send out a full opening announcement, but we hope you'll enjoy these programs and resources as much as we do.

Get in touch with Manuscripts of the Muslim World, a system-wide program in collaboration with the indigenous Muslim community of Philadelphia. Exhibits, public programs, interactive workshops, and more. Sign up to get involved here, or send the project team an email directly.

Information sessions are happening now online and around the city!

and on the second floor...
Garden Variety: An Arrangement of Exceptional Art
Now that the Free Library of Philadelphia is reopening its doors to the public, Parkway Central feels like it is in full bloom again!

To celebrate, enjoy this bouquet of botanically-themed materials housed in the Children's Literature Research Collection, Map Collection, and Print and Picture Collection on the Second Floor (opening August 23).

Al-Mudhif: A Confluence

This new outdoor art installation and gallery show was co-created by our friend Yaroub Al-Obaidi. It's at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and is designed as a sanctuary for belonging and healing across cultures. Programming continues through the end of October!

Building Updates

We've never closed - we're dedicated to bringing you all kinds of resources to keep your curiosity and literacy needs supplied, whether online or curbside... But if you're wondering about our physical buildings, please find updates here.
