Bangalore Based ‘Jaaga Study’ Named a ‘Reclaim Open Learning Innovation Challenge’ Winner
Jaaga Study, an initiative by Jaaga.in, the Bangalore based art, technology and community space, was recently selected as one of five global winners in the ‘Reclaim Open Learning Innovation Challenge’ conducted by the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub, the MIT Media Lab, and supported by the MacArthur Foundation.
Jaaga Study is an intensive one-year program designed to create effective, financially independent computer programmers. The program leverages MOOCs (massive open online courseware) and supplements the online courseware with a vibrant co-working space and a support framework that includes course selection guidance, interaction with technical experts, and active peer learning groups. During the program students also establish personal profiles on internet job boards and spend a portion of their time each week executing paid work online. This provides students with real world context for the concepts they learn in online courses, and helps students develop a portfolio of work to present to potential employers. The flexible and individualized nature of the program allows students to tailor curriculum to their skill level and employment goals. The program will position graduates to obtain jobs in the technology industry and create the next generation of web and mobile applications.
Jaaga Study is launching in January 2014 and is currently accepting applications (jaaga.in/study/).
The Reclaim Open Learning Innovation Challenge and the Open Learning Symposium are part of the efforts launched in 2013 by the Reclaim Open Learning network with the goal of advancing the principles of connected learning in ways that deserve recognition, discussion, and support. Innovation Challenge winners were selected from an international field of applicants, with winners in the US, UK, and India. Jaaga Study is the only challenge winner based in India. Winners will receive an honorarium to support their efforts and will present their models at the symposium to be held on September 26 & 27, 2013 at Calit2, University of California, Irvine. Freeman Murray, co-founder of Jaaga.in, will present Jaaga Study and it’s features at the symposium.
