Hi all,

I’m ordering a new mainsail from UK Sailmakers in Sweden for my J/92. I’ve just received the design proposal and I’ll attach a few screenshots from the SailPack file.

Honestly, I don’t know enough about sail design to judge whether anything looks right or wrong.

My current main is a North 3DL from 2012, and it has developed quite a “beer belly” over the years. I’ve also struggled with mast bend / luff curve and some fullness/wrinkles along the luff area.

One important thing: the previous owner apparently cut about 5 cm out of the luff curve of the old main to reduce draft/fullness. So I’m a bit worried about getting the mast bend / luff curve wrong on the new sail.

The new sail is planned as:

  • X-Drive Carbon, grey 160 with taffeta
  • 4 full battens / performance battens
  • 2 reefs
  • stack pack, since the sail will stay on the boat for the season
  • used for club racing, a few bigger races, and cruising/family sailing

What should I be looking for before approving it?

Main questions:

  • Does the luff curve / mast bend assumption look reasonable for a J/92?
  • Given that the old main had 5 cm removed from the luff curve, what should I ask the loft to check?
  • Any concerns with the roach, batten positions or reef positions?
  • Anything specific to J/92 mainsails that I should ask the loft to confirm?
  • Any common mistakes with new J/92 mains that I should avoid?

I’m not trying to second-guess the sailmaker. I just want to ask the right questions before the sail is built.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have J/92 #9 and all I can say is that UK Sailmakers Northeast, here in the US, made me a beautiful main because they know the boat really well and that's the reason I chose them.  I don't know anything about UK Sweden or if they would collaborate with other UK lofts.

Get someone who knows what they are doing to measure the mast bend at 25, 50 and 75% backstay loading would be my 2 euros worth.

Hey,

UK Sailmakers made new main and foresail for our J/92 S a couple of years ago, very happy with the result. Talk to Oskar Skoting.
