All,

1.  I'm a new J/92 owner.  Just purchased hull #77 and brought her from Texas home to San Diego. The boat is fast and fun; however, my engine is probably shot.

2.  I have found some older posts in the group on repowering the J/92, but would like to hear from those with any recent experience repowering the boat (and get her back to San Diego from Ensenada).

Cheers,

Ryan Rogers

I went to an outboard and would never go back.  Easy to use, tons more power,  You can cruise way above hull speed with the shape of our hull. I get a rating hit of 6seconds. i am more competive racing now... The boat feels completely different. Greater acceleration and feels more like a big dinghy which I like.  ( I rate 102 with a shola draft)
I am using a 15 johnson 2 stoke from the early 2000s  (Its a 9.9 with a modfied carb)and find it to be a perfect outboard for this application. You can get away with less but I still find the extra power to be worth it for the extra speed.

Do you remove it and stow elsewhere, like down below when racing?
How heavy, i.e. difficult to maneuver around the boat?
Tricky in a sea state?

Good question Joe.  I personally bought this boat because it had a diesel.  I got tired of doing the engine walk and stowing on my old J/80.  And I owned 2 3HP 2-stroke engines and had to deal with mixed gas etc.  2, so that I always had one that worked :-).  Today, I know I would own an electric 3HP for the J/80, like the ePropulsion I have on my RIB with the separate battery.  Obviously, 3HP is way too small for the J/92 though...

Also, although a 15 hp outboard doesn’t weigh much (70 -80 lbs?), the weight is in the wrong place hanging off the transom. A bear to get off in a sea state.

I too am a former J80 sailor and every time I fire up the diesel Saildrive on my 92s I am grateful. No more cavitation over waves!

Many thanks on the responses.  My current plan is to sail the boat back to San Diego and have our local Yanmar dealer inspect, and hopefully rebuild if required.  I would prefer not to go the outboard option as we bought this boat for offshore racing.  I would prefer the inboard over the outboard.  We have a J/24 for our inside the bay one design racing, so I will have enough time pulling an outboard off the transom and stowing below with that boat...don't need another!

Hey Ryan,

Congrats on the purchase.  I'm sure you'll love it.  I have J/92 #8 ... just finished our 28th season!
Our 1GM10 was running rougher and rougher for a couple of years until we tore it apart ('we' being my diesel mechanic) last winter.  He did it in the boat.  Found the cylinders/rings/etc were all in pretty good shape and did not need any work.  There is a fairly thin wall in the head between the exhaust and the rest .... it had corroded through.  Probably pinholed for some time, but now was full communication  ... needless to say wasn't doing well with oil in the exhaust etc.  Turns out you can get new heads even though the engine isn't available.  Took the opportunity to replace a bunch of stuff but main thing was the new head.  I had replaced the motor mounts the winter before as the OEM's had become hard.  Between those two jobs the engine sounds/runs/starts as well as it ever has.  Very satisfying.   Not sure what the problem with yours is but hope you can get similar results ...

Cheers,
Colin

Huh.  I wonder if that's what's happening with my engine... I have hull #9 after all...

Could be. Mine had oil/un burned desel in exhaust and a little bit of white smoke. We thought it was the injector,  so we install a new one and that didn’t fix it. Then we thought it was the head gasket, upon taking the top end off the hole in the head was discovered. New head was about $1000 here in Los Angeles. Solved all the problems starts like it was new, No oil or no smoke in the exhaust.

Guys, I have a 92s with the Volvo 2cyl.  So this may not be relevant.  However, I had a huge loss in performance at the beginning of the year.  It was diagnosed as a blocked exhaust bend.  I had it replaced  and everything is now working  sweetly.  On examining the exhaust bend, I found that the  approx 1” pipe had narrowed to the diameter of a drinking straw.  A new exhaust bend cost around €500.

There should be an old thread here on replacing the exhaust elbow. Aaron (Storm Front?) commissioned a limited run of very fine replacements.  If you've never replaced it, likely it should be done. Maybe he'd consider another production run.

Yes, I had one of those very nice stainless mixing elbows and it served me well for the years since.  Even that however was so crusted inside that it couldn't be salvaged and we put a new elbow on in this job as well.

Follow up:

We had a cracked head within the cylinder.  A buddy of mine was kind enough to rebuild the engine while I was on travel out of the country--good friend to have.  No issues pulling the engine out of the compartment using the main halyard--no access cuts required.  Re-installed the engine upon return from overseas and got the engine re-installed in just a couple of hours.  All-in-all, not too bad (especially when my buddy did all the hard work while I was gone).  We spent $1,500 on replacement parts and I slipped my buddy a boat buck and a 12-pack.  Engine is running smooth, and she's ready to hit the racecourse again.

At the end of the day, I came out pretty lucky with only $2,500 out laid and a quick repair timeline with my buddy doing the work.  My alternate plan was to just buy a replacement rebuild and swap out the engines; I think that would have ran me about $5k doing the work myself.  Having it done out in town would have been much more expensive, and probably not complete for a couple more months.

Cheers,
Ryan
