Hi,

I just purchased a new mainsail for my J92 (Navicula) and I am curious to see if anyone could recommend the best "slides" to put on the mainsail.

Thank you,

Herb Roth

I also bought a new sail this year. North carbon. I didn't want slides and only used a bolt rope. I take my sail off after use and put it to bed. I wouldn't want slides unless its a dacron sail that you keep on the boom.

Ask your North rep? All of my mains have had Allslip slides (#A031?)
including the 3DL's.

With the 92's mast section I don't think ditching the slides adds any
performance, and they sure are nice when shorthanded. Once in the
slip or the wind dies down you can drop them out of the mast and flake
the sail down flat on the boom.

We go for a bolt rope

and prefer to roll our carbon sails rather than flake them

Its not as handy, but I think better for the sails – and pays if they last longer!!

Best Regards

Largely depends on how you are going to use the boat and what material the main is made from If any kind of laminate rolling is best.

All high test racing? , I concur with previous poster, assuming it is a laminate of some kind, remove and roll. this is of course a PIA solo as when going for a harbour tour with wife or girlfriend, jusr a couple of mates sailors or not.

If you are doing a mix of distance and goofing off the best slides for low friction are Allslip brand by Bainbridge
.http://www.sail-making.com/dbimgs/page78_79_80us.pdf

Best to call mast maker (HALL?) 401 253 4858 ask for Nan and confirm tunnel diameter. There are several round Allslip that will fit your spar setion. NB the Allslip are longer, that is Taller than "normal slides. about 2 inches so check the gate for sufficient height. Also gate may be 6 or so inches up off tack and made for bolt ropes so you will need a device to hold slides in place. Available from West or riggers. Made by Davis Insstruments:
http://www.davisnet.com/marine/products/list_marine.asp?grp=m22-3. and here:
http://www.davisnet.com/product_documents/marine/manuals/2350_SlTrkSp_INS.PDF

Also this may effect the luff reefing detail. If you are retrofitting the slides, make sure you tell the sailmaker the height above the tack fitting that the gate stop is, so they can arrange the slides around the luff reef cringle so you can get the luff reef ring on the hook.
And yes I was a sailmaker for 20 plus  years and have see all of the issues that are possible to get srcrewed up in this situation.

I had my sailmaker put on the same slugs used on j105`s. Works great.

Thanks Dave,
I don't have a dacron sail but I don't know any other way that I can get the mainsail up when I am out sailing singlehanded.  I guess I need more friends.

If you're not racing at the Grand Prix level, slides are perfectly acceptable. I flake my main on the boom and it causes no real problems. The actual use of the sail is a much greater source of wear and tear.

My new North 3DL 680 has a bolt rope.  Hoisted it for the first time this weekend.  A very snug fit but that’s ok.  And it’ll be easier to tune as a result.  We don’t leave our racing sails on the boom.  Rolled and bagged every race.

For shorthanding, slides are definitely the way to go.
