Hi all,
I've been through the files here on inhaulers and spoken with others and am convinced we can make a small gain out of it (and believe others in our fleet are doing well with them so we are just giving away some performance). My jib inventory appears to have the clew cut high enough to make it work.  Bob, appreciated your email with suitable errr "fittings".  LOL  So I am angling for any thoughts or advice regarding actual deck hardware install geometries.  Marco, I found an old post where you said you had them installed on your S.  Happy with that?  Any pictures?  Best to all as the season approaches!

The J/111 rings are a bit oversize but work well (as inhaulers vs. earrings!) but I didn't want all the string, blocks, cams etc. on the cabintop like on the 111.  Rags' inhaulers are dead-ended on the centerline forward of the seahood, then go through the "earrings" and through Antal ferrules to a single adjuster on the starboard side.  I run it to a spare clutch.  With the tail on a winch I can easily bring the clew right in against the handrail.  Between the inhaulers and a fresh #3 with horizontal battens, the jib is much closer-winded.  The jury is still out on whether the boat gets to weather better.  It probably does in flat water.

If I ever get away from my desk to go sailing (I'm a CPA) I'll take a picture and post it.  I know, I've been promising photos for awhile...

Ciao,
I love to start the weekend talking about our j ....
Now it' s 2 years that we are using inhaulers and we are nothing but happy : a big help in pointing better expecialy  in the light/ medium range of wind and flat see.we have also increase the tightness of the forestay and this was also a positive fine tuning.if it's not going to rain too mucch i'll visit "her" and i'll make some photos.

Meanwhile please have a look to this photo . I have take out the 2 cushions in the fore cabin
2 big improvement :
1) for the boat A lighter weight in the fore part of the boat ( i big difference on waves conditions) .
2) for the wife..no more wet cushions because of the gennaker .
3) easier when we want the gennaker up.you can fix the gennaker bag to the net.

Have a good week end

Here is my setup. No holes, no cleats, just a ring and a strop tied to the handrail and led back to cabin top winches.
Works fine.
Marco, excellent ideas - just make sure IRC likes it (legal ?)

question - when will you be getting your iPad 5
:-)

Grateful for all replies so far!  Bob, thank you for the description and look for to any images should time allow.  Marco, hearing of your positive thoughts on the inhauler use really convinces me it is necessary.  Also, I really appreciate the simplicity of the furkolkjaaf install.  It strikes me that you can make an arrangement like this with the handrail b/c you aren't going to be
inhauling in a big breeze anyway and the angle is favorable.  Hadn't really thought of before now.  Again with gratitude and any
additional photos would be received with thanks.
Regards,
EC

EC, I didn't have time (or enough wind) to sail today but here are some photos.

On the QA2 we have used inhaulers for two or three years now, and think they're necessary at this point.  We played around with a lot of different set ups, and ended up with a 2-1 at the inhauler, with one side deadended at the base of the mast and the other end going across the boat to the opposite side deck organizer.  We don't have all the extra halyards and what not that some of the distance racing boats have, so we just used a spare block in the organizer.  We then added a three to one purchase and installed a cam cleat just outside the winch.  Or maybe it's inside, I forget!

Anyway, the benefit of that set up is that the inhauler ring can float fore and aft.  When we used the hand rail or a fixed block (both of which we tried) we lost control of the clew position when fully inhauled.  The other benefit of the cross boat set up is the ability to change inhauler settings from the windward rail.  On boats like a Farr 30, that's the first adjustment you make if you're having trouble staying fast (in big waves, big breeze, or super light).  So that may be helpful in windy venues.  In Annapolis, I actually kind of prefer them on the leeward side because we often have our jib trimmer down there.

I can also try to get a picture up, but not sure when i'm going down to the boat next.

I originally had one on each side, crossing the boat forward as Dan describes (like my port inhauler does now).  My rep from North suggested the single control so you know you have the same setting when you tack.  I guess you could also get that with marks on the inhauler tails.

The single control also gets rid of one set of tackle coming aft.  As you can see, getting rid of anything on my boat helps - although those photos show the most control-intensive part of the boat.  I've really only added one jib halyard (solent) and one spinnaker halyard (non-stretch for the Code 0).

ciao max
the irc rules gives the owner the possibilities to declare this kind of changes & weight saving for cuscions and bed/door/table.
so i think i am allowed to use this new asset for the forecabin just for racing as unfortunatly i am not sailing under j92 class rules

Just wanted to close this out and add some thanks for the various pictures and advice.  Ended up with a setup very similar to Ragtime and also the stock J111.  Mounted an eye through the deck under the vang where the deck starts to angle up to accommodate the hatch.  Chose this as it is just solid glass and the entry angle of the bolt eliminated any potential interference with the headliner (J92S).  18' of Dyneema 6mm with an eye with the last 8' of the 18' covered so the clutch would hold.  Simple stainless rings (so far no indication that they will be beating up the deck with each tack).  Have them rigged cross-boat (under the handrail) then back to the inner most roller of the opposite side deck organizer and then back to the innermost clutch on the windward side.  I can see advantages to giving access to the trimmer on the leeward side, but am happy for now with a windward person inhauling.  We used them this weekend (yesterday specifically in a nice 10-14kts breeze during the NYYC Annual) with very good effect.  Much better lower jib shape; improved point; better power in lower wind speeds.  I'm sorry I waited this long to do it.  Thanks for the posts, emails and pictures everyone.

Thanks that's super helpful - i'm not sure about the inhaulers really adding much to the equation too - but gotta give the trimmers something to fiddle with...
