I am interested in upgrading to a J/92 and would like some advice from
your group. I mostly sail on an inland southern US lake (Lake
Hartwell on the Savannah river between NE Georgia and Western South
Carolina). The wind is generally light - 5 to 10 mph. I have sailed
a J/24 for the last 20 years. I race PHRF and the main competition
for the top of the fleet is a Melges 24 and a Capri 25.
My main interest in the J/92 is for a more stable boat and one that is
less crew-intensive for use of the spinnaker. I’m 61 and my wife is
60. She generally races with me but does not enjoy the J/24 when the
wind reaches the mid-teens.
Given the above, I would appreciate responses to the following
questions:
1. Which would be a better boat for my purposes – a J/92 or a J/92S?
2. Can an overlapping headsail be used with a J/92S?
3. In 15 mph winds, how do the sheet loads for the class jib compare
to that of a J/24 genoa?
4. Have hull blisters been a problem with any of the J/92 production
years?
5. Have there been different methods of construction over the years
and if so, which is better?
I would be interested in a late model boat in very good shape – not a
“project.” If anyone knows of one, please let me know.
Thanks

Hello all,
Thanks

Not sure I agree with you re the J92S in light airs
We certainly hold our pace in light airs against the J92, agree that the
overlapping headsail is a help, but the bigger main makes a difference
For short handed the 92S also wins, less need for headsail changes if you
get your loft to make you a good heavy No.1
A lot of 92 are adding mast head kites too here in UK

However, happy to be corrected. I'm sure the manufacturer specs would prove
accurately.
