The J92 hand book shows a spacer washer between the hull and the
rudder blade. Dr Henry Jekyll does not have one here but rather
between the deck and the tiller fitting. Is this wrong? Should there
be a spacer bottom and top, top only or bottom only? How thick should
it be?

The rudder was loading up last year when the boat was on the edge,
perhaps the blade was contacting the hull?

The piece at the top is a friction bearing between the rudder head and rudder tube. It's a big plastic washer. Very important unless you want the metal rudder head to grind away the top of the rudder tube.

The piece at the bottom is a spacer to keep the top of the rudder away from the hull. It's a short plastic sleeve on the rudder post. Very important unless you want the top of your rudder grinding away the hull around the rudder tube.

Same vintage boat as yours. Like your online material, seem to be doing a
lot of the same work.

If the leading edge of the rudder was rubbing the hull, you'd see it
in your bottom paint. If you're on the hard, you can also try to lift
your rudder and see if it rubs anywhere.

My boat was missing the spacer also. Not sure this will work, but
here's a link to my bushings and spacers. The white one is the sleeve
that I think you're talking about. It's 1.75" long if I recall.

As I am in the process of making new bearings, I'm also going to build new spacers. If time is not important I can make a set for you. Using a hole saws and 1/8 inch teflon make a good set. I am just now in the process of buying the teflon. when you build these, clamp your teflon to a 2x6 piece of wood. Cut our the inner small ring out fist, then put your guide drill in the guide hole you just created and cut the outer ring. My two hole saws are 1/2 inch difference in size and the spacer came out perfect.

Let me know if you need a set.

David sorry to take so long getting back to you. I ended up casting a new
spacer in West epoxy using an old spacer in some dental alginate. Only a few
days until I will be able to test! Enjoy the day, David
