Hi,

has somebody experience with the substitute/spare parts for worn-out rudder bearings for a J92, #11?

Thank you in advance for further informations.

I made mine from delrin AF which is delrin with teflon mixed in for better lubrication/less friction.

First step is dropping your rudder to see how worn the shaft is and if you need to address anything on that. From there you can get the bushings out to use as templates for a new one

Thomas,

You'll find a few threads on tiller bushing replacement on this forum. As Aaron said, the early models have low-friction Delrin bushings rather than real bearings - an inspection after dropping the rudder will tell. I'm in the process of replacing the bushings on #14 - yours is likely similar. I'm not aware of anything available off-the-shelf, so we're left to fabricate it. I used Delrin material from McMaster Carr: 3" dia 12" long rod (part #: 8579k52) and a white 4" dia. 4" long disk (part #:8582K26). Stock material is oversized for the machine to grip.

Drawing attached - any machine shop with a lathe should be able to turn the parts.

As Aaron noted 'slop' may come from wear on the tiller shaft itself. I've seen some folks add material back using epoxy resin on the carbon fiber shaft, but haven't worked up the courage yet. Does anyone else have cautionary/encouraging experience with this?

There is also a 'lip' inside the rudder tube on the boat that holds the upper bushing in place - it should be inspected for damage. When fitting new bushings, be sure the upper bushing is not too long which would causing the weight of the whole rudder assembly to be carried by this lip - the rudder weight should be carried by the deck through the top collar.

Best,
Robert

I am just going to try to add epoxy to my post and bearing.   Here are pics of my bearing and post from #37 if that helps

Worked for me. Doing it on the dining room table didn't.

Hi Rob Ferguson and everybody,

My post looks worn although not as much, as Rob's look if you look closely (which I did not).  Rob, how did adding epoxy to the post work out for you?  My top bearing is so tight there is no way the post rotated without the bearing rotating so it wasn't much of a bearing...  My rudder is now in my garage and I'm trying to decide what to do.

I dropped it, because on some points of sail in wind it the helm felt "sticky".  The bottom bearing also had some play but not terrible.   It had also worn the post.

Thanks,
Dan Stone

The yard put some of this UHMW tape on the shaft, it worked ok.  I think the big issue was loose bushing allows the back of the rudder to come in contact with the hull when reaching hard.  I have the rudder out again right now. I’m going to put the tape on the upper portion of the rudder stock to see if i can improve it a bit more.

Hi,

here are drawings of Delrin Tiller bushings which worked very well in my J92 Jack Flash, #13.

I went to a small machinery drilling shop and he made 2 sets of Tiller bushings. I glued them with Sikaflex in the rudder shaft.

Best Regards

Hi All,

Thanks for the drawing.  I remember looking at it.  Just didn't think I'd ever need it :-).

One other thing is where the 1/4" bolt that goes through the stainless steel "hat" and rudder stock, one of the holes the bolt goes through looks worn.  I will take a picture when I have the piece in my hand.

Thanks,
Dan Stone
