The warn East Coast weather means a new bottom for Zut Alors. I have
just completed completely stripping off all the paint and sanding the
gel coat with 80 grit. I will put a new epoxy barrier coat on after
the snow comes and I'd like to ask this group their thoughts on bottom
paint.

I had Baltoplate on before, but would foul pretty good, as I had to
clean 2x a month. Do you have suggestions with an Interlux paint you
sugest? I am in Eastern Long Island Sound and in salt water.

I had the yard strip and refinish the bottom with Baltoplate last year. Came out of the water in November looking perfect. I have a diver scrub weekly during the season.

We put coppercoat on our J105 last winter and have been very pleased with
its performance.

And more importantly we were lifted out today and all the prep needed on the
hull this winter is a light sand/wipe

http://coppercoat.com/

If you are going back to gelcoat then worth considering. Needs to be
applied professionally though as its not an easy 2 part mix etc. we
actually sandblasted the hull back which again cost, but saved hours of
sanding

Happy crew this winter with less sanding in the rain!!

Best Regards

Pete

Todd, I do like baltoplate due to its ability to be sanded, but I
can't dive on the boat, as Noank Shipyard has a rule that you can't
dive to clean the bottom while its on the mooring. I was looking for
alternatives that would allow me to have a bit more time in between
cleaning.

A few have used coppercoat in our area. As Pete says, it does cut down on
winter work, and the quality of application is paramount to working
effectively.
However, from what I have seen, in our area in the South West of England,
the owners still needed to scrub frequently in order to remove the slime
that still builds up in the warmer months. May be less of an issue in some
areas, but still a problem here.

I moved to International VC Offshore a couple of seasons ago and have been
very pleased with the results so far. Again, I still need to get the hull
scrubbed 3 - 4 times in the warmer part of the season, but otherwise it has
performed well for me. I did investigate some of the ultrasonic solutions
before moving to VC. The problem with those are - permanent power source
required, the area of the hull where the transducer is mounted needs to have
the core removed and filled with solid GRP and there was no guarantee that
it would counter slime build up - so the scrub would still be required even
after a significant investment in the system.

Anyone that comes up with an anti-fouling that counters slime will be a rich
man!

Andy.

I have Baltoplate on this boat and had OffShore on my Evelyn. In terms
of grown and fouling, they both seem to be the same for me. I'm told
OffShore has a little stronger concentration but I didn't see any real
difference.

For cleanings, I use a http://www.dridiver.com/ I pull the boat to
the dock from the mornings and with one or two crew members, and we
can clean the boat in about 15-20 min. Looking at it, it's certainly
something you can easily construct and don't know if I'd spend the
$250 on it. But it came with my other boat and I kept it and it works
well on the hull but haven't found a good way to clean the foils.

I had Baltoplate on my J/33. The yard told me it was the same paint
as VC Offshore but with molybdenum in it as a burnishing agent instead
of Teflon. My diver hated it. After a few months it developed tiny
pinholes that provided an entry point for growth to attach, making it
much harder to clean. When it was clean it was fast though.

I'm going back in the water for a couple of seasons and just repainted
with Micron CSC, based mostly on my diver's recommendation. It's
harder than the Trilux I had before, and it burnished up very well.
If we're having this discussion again in a few months I'll let you
know how it's working.

Happy New Year J92ers.  I sail in SF Bay and have been using Mircon 66 for the past three years.  It's an ablative paint that I've had rolled on.  My boat is in the water year round and I've been getting about 18 months of good performance from this paint.  Absolutely no hard growth, only some slime build up depending on how long you go between wipe downs (I dive my boat and use a soft micro fiber towel to wipe off the slime).  Generally only need to clean the bottom every other month or so - motoring fast to the starting area usually cleans off the light slime.
