I am curious if owners have installed bilge pump into classic J 92? Bilge is so deep and narrow!
What brand are you using and how do you Like the setup? Thank you!

Best advice I ever received was "If you need a bilge pump, you have more serious problems to solve first" ...I removed mine to include the hand pump and glassed over the hole in the cockpit. I use a hand vacuum pump to remove water seeping in around  the partners.

Hull 14 had both the original manual pump and an after-market Rule automatic bilge pump when I bought her.  The pump was unreliable and I replaced it with another brand. The electric pump sits on top of the keel bolts, so it can't completely empty the sump, but it gives me peace of mind.

On some of these J/92's the dividers go all the way down to the bolts. This makes it tough to fit a pump in. I used the Whale Supersub.

I mounted it vertically in a compartment aft of the bulkhead. I had to make a bracket to get it down deep in the bilge. I also added an electronic water sensor and an auto/manual switch. Routed the hose out through the "closet" to a thru hull mounted at the sheer line. Don't forget a check valve to prevent water from coming in when the boat is sailing heeled

Nice to have the piece of mind of a automatic bilge pump.

John

Speaking of bilge pumps, my boat started sinking recently - fortunately slowly but the water was almost up to the floorboards.

There are four hose clamps on the rubber tubing where the prop shaft goes through the hull behind the engine.  Even though the clamps are SS, one of them had corroded and broken.  The occasional drip from the stuffing box/gland was quite a bit more than an occasional drip.  So there's something to check.

I have a little round Rule electric pump that just fits between the keel bolts so it bottoms out on the floor of the sump.  It has a built-in water sensor (no float switch) and I added a check valve in the hose just above it.  It's nice for keeping the bilge really dry.

Bob,

Can you share the model number of the Rule pump?

Thanks,
Todd

Hi Todd,

In their catalog, your favorite retail store (West Marine) lists three electronic-sensing Rule pumps.  All the others require a float switch.

Mine is the Rule 1100gph.  It's the same width as their smallest 500gph pump but is a bit taller and has a larger output hose.
