Archambault 31

Hi,
Just curious whether any of you folks in Europe have sailed against
the new Archambault 31? We have the first North American one here in
Nova Scotia. I'm curious of your impressions and what rating it has
in comparison to either the J/92 (classic) or J/92s.

Hi,

in the last edition of the biggest German Yachting Magazine they tested A31 against J97, Dehler 32RS and Elan 31. There is a link attached with a movie (in German language but anyway good to see how the A31 is performing.

The A31 has had some good results on the racing circuit, but normally with
rockstars aboard. As a new boat this tends to happen to promote them, they
then get hammered on IRC/handicap just when mere mortals are starting to buy
them

We have just finished Dartmouth regatta, where we were pitched against one.
Mixed weather and close results with the A31 giving us 3 points on handicap.
This seems a generous handicap for a more racy looking boat

The A31 didn't seem to do better in any particular direction or wind
strength, we had a couple of poor races, but then we didn't see what they
were doing on-board!

There is a mod for a bow sprit on a A31, which I assume would drop its
handicap a couple of points.

You will see from the results that the J97 both did well, both were well
sailed too. I am not a fan of the J97 looks or layout, but its performance
against handicap is excellent - at the moment

The A31 looks a great design, not sailed one yet. I think I will be looking
for a test sail this winter - with an open mind

The other benefit of J's in UK is the regattas and the option to race J on
J, although as the other fleets gain in size, J109, 105 and 97, they start
having their own starts. The J92 may be left to fight it out in an also ran
class if we don't keep the numbers up
