I want to replace the rudder bearings on my J92S. However, I am having trouble removing the rudder.
The bolt holding the block on top of the rudder stock will not move. It has an allen key head and it is difficult to exert much pressure to turn the nut without the hex flats for the key getting damaged.

Also, I assume that the central pin needs to be driven out. Is this correct? I have tried hitting it quite hard with a bar and block hammer but it doers not move.

See pictures. Any advice will be appreciated.

Try removing the hex with an impact drill. Don't force anything much, it will come out.

Jeff,

Last fall, I removed and replaced both rudder bearings. I ran into similar issues with removing the Allen-head bolt and the pin from the block on the rudder shaft. The block is anodized aluminum, and the bolt and pin are stainless steel—so there’s galvanic action between the two.

To remove the bolt, I used Corrosion Blaster and worked it back and forth with a handheld Allen wrench, letting the Corrosion Blaster soak in whenever I made some progress. I also applied short bursts of heat to the block. Eventually, I was able to get it to move.

For the pin, I used an automotive gear puller rigged to push it out. Since the block is soft, I made a plate to distribute the load evenly across its face. Again, I used Corrosion Blaster to help loosen things up. Worked a little at a time with pressure, soak, more pressure as the pin moved,

Before reassembling everything, I cleaned all the surfaces and applied Lanocote to help prevent future corrosion.

Photos attached.

I have more info on sourcing the bearings if you need it.

Would seem prudent to inspect that bolt now and make sure it can be manipulated when needed.
They are great boats but production boats none the less

Morning

Argh yeas the rudder bearings and the top hat on the top of the shaft.

I gave up after setting fire to the boat with a blow torch trying to warm it up with a soldering blanket as protection!!!
Guess it was the oil that was set alight.

In the end an engineer had to cut the old one off.

Dropped the rudder, new top hat made. New top and bottom bearings.
Then had a new tiller arm made due to lots of electric action there too.
Really good operation in France called international boat spares.
Whilst you are there replace the shims (plastic friction washer) between the top hat and the deck as they go brittle in the sun…..
Sadly couldn’t find a new tiller arm so have to have one made.
It will feel much better once the bearings have been changed.

Have a good day.

Becky
