Hi

We lost the rudder on our J92 while racing a few weeks back so need to
replace it, has anyone fitted the 92s rudder to a 92? Would there be
any advantage performance wise etc. in fitting the 92s rudder?

I don't know what the difference in performance is for the 2 rudders
but if you are racing you need to be carfeul what you change. I know
in IRC you are required to declare changes to hull rudder keel and may
get hit on handicap for it.

The 92S's rudder appears to be a more efficient shape - deeper but
with a shorter chord. You could send an e-mail to J/Boats and ask
whether the angle of the counter, rudder post depth and diameter are
the same, etc. and see what they think.

A downside is that the longer rudder from the 92S (used with the
shorter keel of the 92) could be damaged more easily in a grounding.
The 92 rudder tends to stay clear of the hard stuff (I speak from
experience). I assume this keel vs. rudder depth ratio is in a naval
architect's reference somewhere.

For the Darwin-ists out there the 92 S rudder would, logically, be "better":
but
I also agree--- beware of the rating hits, esp under IRC. Further agree that anything "new" needs to be fully checked: with J, the builders, the rudder fab guys (if not TPI) etc. Due Diligance is key.
BTW can we get 25 words or less on just what happened to loose the rudder, assuming it is not too embarrassing...?
