Hi all,

I remain resolute in finding a source for cockpit foot braces for my J92 to replace the wood ones (you J92S guys have this problem solved with the molded cockpit floor).  I’ve now found a local shop that does all kinds of custom sailboat work and I’m working with them to design foot braces for our use.  You can learn more about them at:   http://dcmenterprises.net.

Of course, most of the cost is in the setup.  So if there are others of you interested in getting a set, it will reduce the cost for all of us.  We’re still in preliminary discussions, but it looks like the cost will be somewhere between $500-700 (not including shipping).  Also in discussion regarding materials – carbon would be nice but probably more expensive.  The more people who purchase would also make it more economical for the manufacturer to do finish work as well (i.e., paint, apply non-skid, etc).

Obviously more details will be forthcoming, but I’d like to get an idea of this level of interest across the fleet.  Please email me if you are interest in pursuing this opportunity.

Thanks and regards,

Tracy

I have an interest.  Just to be clear we’re talking about replacing the skinny teak cockpit rails with something more substantial, right?

I'm working on a design for Thin Man which I'm happy to share.

I decided on four braces: port/stbd helm and port/stbd main. Each brace will be two 5" x 18" faces joined at a right angle on the long edge, sitting like a tent on the sole and with the inboard edge just inside the teak toe strip. It'll be glassed to the sole. The helm brace is just aft of the traveler and the main brace is just forward.

This arrangement works for the driver sitting completely behind the trav as well as straddling the trav. The size of the face makes it possible to get both feet on the brace even wearing sea boots. The 45deg angle of the face plus non-skid should help me stay on the high side in a knock-down --not that I experience many of those. ;-)

Andy,  that’s correct.  Replacing the skinny teak pieces that do not really work well as foot braces…

Hi all, couldn't help but notice  the discussion regarding the foot braces, which reminded me of my search for the same for the boat I got last year.

I was not satisfied with the cost of carbon [to match the wheel, mast, etc] which admittedly was high for a two-off, given the security requirements, re:  the forces bracing exert.

I went down to my local wood guy looking for teak, mahogany, or walnut something around 3" x 3" and for a 2 foot piece for $35, he thru in the diagonal sawing, walla two wedges.

I did the rest myself, sawing the ends, sanding the sharp edges and thru bolting using 1/4" coarse s.s. machine hex bolts, all bedded in caulking.

They're the only teak on the boat, and I love em, especially when I'm on my ear in 20 knots of breeze.

Its critical to position them as though you are standing at the tiller at 45 degrees, you don't want your knees to be bent [too close] , nor the tiller up at your chin [too far away].

I attach 2 pdfs of the situation and the drawing.

P.s. I sold my J92s but loved the food braces although they were too narrow.

Cheers

Rick

Sounds like we should start posting our designs and thoughts as I've
also started sketching something as a spring project. Was going the
metal route and thinking either stainless (heavy) or powder coated Al
(should stand up to boat shoes). My thought was to make something
that would bolt through the sole for easy install. Looked at doing a
fiberglass mold, but the time was too great for mold making as well as
install. Carbon would be sexy but don't want to pay the price and for
those who've met me know I'm not a sexy guy...

Fiberglass would certainly be easier on your foot when you kick them
on a tack which is what I keep coming back to. Please keep the details
coming as buying someone else's project is much less aggravating than
doing your own!

Todd,

Did you install these supermodified cockpit foot braces? Do you
pictures/drawings??

The braces are not yet installed, because:

1) they aren't finished (labor issues)
2) the recoring of the cockpit sole was badly done and needs to be redone.

I won't be glassing them in, just secured with 5200 and thru-bolts with
finishing washers.

We could have used the braces today! (15-25kts).

Mine have been installed for 4-5 years with just 5200 - no holes
through the cockpit sole. I'm a little surprised but so far, so good.

If you get tired of waiting, here's another option:

Yesterdays sail with a few knock downs has me thinking about braces again.
Those braces seem to fit the bill and at good price.  Do you have any pictures of them installed on your boat Bob?  This might be added to my winter project list

We had photos of them in the former Files section - before they "improved" Google Groups.  If you archived that, look for Bensons1 and Bensons2.  I can't find the originals but here are a couple of newer shots.  First the bird's eye view:

This is how the double biased carbon foot braces turned out that we had
fabricated earlier this year. There was enough surface area on the flange
that I applied them with 4200 directly to the cockpit floor. They have
worked great. Only one other owner, Kevin, decided to go in with me when we
had the tooling completed. DCM still has the tooling so if you wanted to
have a set made that's still a possibility.

They seem twice as long as needed, but that might be better than nothing at all! :-o

Then a recent shot when out testing the new A3/5 on the furler.  "I don't HAVE to clean up - I'm a single-hander!"  (Actually not safe . . . )  The footbraces are in there somewhere!

What was the cost on these?? These appear to be the right height I'm
looking for. Bob's appear to be a little over the top for my situation.

I've seen them on Tracy's "Relentless" and they look right for the
boat - they did a nice job. Mine came off of E-Bay (seriously).

Aaron, I didn't use the braces from Left Coast. If you ever sail in,
like, wind or anything - these are the best improvement you can make.

Okay, bonus points to anyone who can name what the seven rope clutches
on Ragtime! are for.

Mrs. Benevent,

Our condolences on the loss of your husband.

I have looked through our Members list and cannot find the e-mail

Is it possible that Ed had our e-mails sent through another address

Main
Jib #1
Jib #2 (Solent)
Spin #1
Spin #2 (Vectran for the Code 0 and NDPO reacher)
Tack Line
Inhauler (buoy) or solent stay (offshore)

Actually there's an eighth clutch forward to double up the main or jib
halyard to prevent slippage - the other stays on the winch.

When I redid my deck I had had some custom ones made them molded in but they could be easily made to screw or glue on top. They are carbon fiber and are the perfect size for my size 12 foot. The guy that made them for me still has the molds and I can put you in contact

A local marine repair business made up foot blocks for Dragonfly (28) when we had the cockpit replaced 4 years ago.  They were made from purple foam ( home depot) shaped, glued and then wrapped in two layers of very thin fiberglass cloth, then laminated to the cockpit sole.  The forward blocks are taller than the aft ones.  I can send a photo if you are interested.  Luckily, there was a 92S in the marina, so we had some idea of what the finished product should look like.  They are a great addition and have not had any problems with them.
