survey of available J/92s in U.S./Canada

Hi guys, 

As Todd knows, I may be in the market for a J/92.  So I'm checking in on what's available.  I know of one J/92 in the U.S. (Zut Alors, offered through McMichael's).  I know of 3 J/92s boats for sale in the U.S. -- one in Shelburne, VT (Windtrip 8, offered through Bruce Hill), one in Greenport, NY (HC II, offered through Bruce Tait), and one in Trappe, MD (Red, White & Blue, offered through  Oxford Boatyard).  These are the ones listed on YachtWorld.

Please let me know if you are aware of any others, or are aware of any potential sellers in the U.S. and Canada.  Also, please let me know if you have knowledge of any of these boats (e.g., performance or construction issues, or any significant work that has been done or that needs to be done).

Does anybody think it makes any amount of sense to search availability across the pond?

I vaguely recall determining that the cost of shipping a boat from
Europe to the US East Coast would not be vastly different from trucking
a boat from the US West Coast. If you look up the listed prices for some
European boats and factor in the current USD/EUR exchange rate, you
should be able to get a general go/no-go sense. At the time I was
shopping for Thin Man, the rate was much different than it is today.

It's not that I'm not satisfied.  Frankly, I haven't dug into the specifics of any of the boats to determine whether there are any issues.  I just wanted to see, as an initial matter, before looking at any particular boat, whether YachtWorld is the only resource.

It would take close to double your price to buy mine, and I'd still have to think long and hard about it.

If that boat were up here, it would sell in about 5 minutes.  You really should think about at least $45000. Even after hauling it from Texas, it would be a good deal for a lot of people up here.

Good price on Full Tilt.  Yachtworld shows it at $54K.  Like the original poster, I was looking for a J/92S and had looked at the 3 that he mentions that are listed on Yachtworld.  I ruled out the one in MD after I heard about some issues with mast damage it sustained in transit and a chunk out of the keel after a grounding.  The other two still interest me.  But, maybe a J/92 at half the price should be considered.

The discussion of cost of a J/92 vs a new J/88 are interesting.  Of course you get an updated and supposedly faster boat that is 20 years newer.

Not to hijack the thread, but can the group tell me what the pros and cons are of the J/92 vs J/92S vs J/88.  The original poster may have the same question.  I understand the J/88 is an unknown at this point, but maybe you can help with my thinking on why I should consider a J/92 at half the price of a J/92S?  I have an idea what they might be, but I don't own one, so please help me out here.  I've sold my previous boat and the weather is getting nicer.

Re 92 does well on handicap in uk and some have fitted masthead kites which seems to help

The S is a newer boat and comes with a sail drive engine which is smooth to run the tweaks to keel rudder and cockpit size fix all the niggles with the 92 If you can afford go for an S I am sure it will hold its value better too

Pat,

I have had my J/92 (#8) for 17 seasons!  I would replace it but haven't found a boat I would like more ... at least yet.

I sail in Nova Scotia in a wide variety of conditions.  Our club evening racing is often done in under 8 knots ... our weekend club racing in 10-20 ... and regattas run the gamut from 5-25+.  My feeling is that the 'classic' J/92, which allows for an overlapping genoa has a performance edge over a J/92 in one-design mode or a J/92s in the light stuff.  Above 11-12 knots, it loses that edge.  My impression, probably somewhat unfair, is that the updated sail plan of the /92s is still mated to the 'older' hull shape of the /92 classic and doesn't produce that much benefit in most conditions.  I must say that the /88 intrigues me more than anything else I've seen in a while.  I will demo sail it, though the cost difference would be quite substantial.  

On the down side for the classic /92 .... you can pretty much be guaranteed that if a classic /92 hasn't yet had wet core in the cockpit +/- the decks worked on and replaced ... you will face it eventually.  Many of the hulls have now had a cockpit job and, in some cases, more extensive work.  I had a pretty substantial amount of work done on mine 1 year ago and I'm happy to say that the chainplate mounting on the bulkhead, the cockpit floor, etc. are all now redone, dry and secure.  If you can find a hull where this work has already been done, and done well, it is my opinion that you would be getting a lot of bang for the buck.  

I love the lines of my /92 ... I like the way it looks under sail and at mooring.  When I get it in the groove, it will sail with no hand on the tiller both upwind and down including on the plane.  It is the right size for the sailing I do and my three kids have all grown up sailing on it with our 'famly and friends' crew.  They are all capable dinghy sailors but love sailing on the /92 as well.  

Performance-wise I would say the /92 classic will give something away to the new /88 upwind particularly in a chop (hull shape) and off the wind (weight).  I think you also have to think about what PHRF rating band you want to be in.
