As part of my purchase of Ragtime, from the wonderful Bob Johnston, I received many sails.  They are North, and I am part of the marketing department at Quantum.  So…. I have many more sails than I need, and I’m offering them for sale.  Many have photos available in use.  Inspection by Quantum Service Dept. and photos since purchase (on the loft floor) and can be done upon request.  All prices negotiable.  List attached.

Hi Libby,
I'm new in the fleet with my #138 purchased in England last year but I live in Hungary.
I'm interested in more sails offered by you, suppose it is no problem for you the send the purchased items
to Europe. I would take main 2012, the heads 2013 and 2009, the spin 2012.
Kindly ask you to send me pics about all to my email as follows: asadih...@gmail.com
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Kind regards
Steve

Hi Libby,

I enjoyed reading your story of J/92 KNOCKOUT in the November 27 J/Sailing News. I am the original owner of hull #18 and can fill you in on the boat's early years. Your account is somewhat garbled.

Best,

Joe Moore

Hi Joe,

Great to connect with you!  Glad you enjoyed my little article.  I got to chatting with Stuart Johnstone at the Newport Boat Show this fall, and he encouraged me to submit something, especially after we ended up winning the season.  I sent him some photos too, but those didn’t seem to make it into the newsletter… oh well.    Yes— I’d absolutely love to hear about your adventures with #18!  I think it’s really neat to know the history of things, and the part of the story that included you was just the little smidgen that Bob mentioned when we were talking about the boat’s history during the selling/buying process.

Thanks so much,
Libby Tomlinson

Great article, Libby!

The "garbled" part probably has to do with the other J boats named Ragtime.  To my knowledge, none of the Johnstones owned J/92 hull #18.

Several other J Boat models were named Ragtime by the Johnstones including the very first, the light blue predecessor to the J/24.  One of these was the first J/90, of which only six were built.  J/90 hull number 1 was Rod J's boat and was also light blue.  It came out to SF Bay a few months after my (your) J/92, and entered some of the same races I did.  So we had two 30 foot J Boats, both blue and both named Ragtime, which caused some confusion for the race committees.  Mine had an exclamation point but that usually didn't make it into the race registrations.  I had a friendly conversation with the other owner and neither of us wanted to change our boat names.

During your purchase, I probably told the other part of the backstory about the name.  Once I decided to name the J/92 Ragtime!, I e-mailed Rod Johnstone to ask his permission.  Since the boat would be raced on the West Coast and all the other Ragtimes (except for the "real" one - the Spencer 65) were raced on the East Coast, Rod graciously agreed.  He joked though that had it been his brother (Bob Johnstone) asking, he would have said "no way!"

A final note:  The exclamation point lives on with my new boat.  It is hull #6 and was named Surprise, after the ship in the Master and Commander books.  Surprise is a fairly common boat name but I decided not to completely change it.  Instead, I again added an exclamation point.  Then to recognize the wonderful boat that I had for many years (now yours), I changed the sail numbers to #18.  Her new A2 just arrived - see below!

It's great to see Joe Moore pop up, who was hull #18's only owner before me, and who took great care of her.

Thank you both, Bob and Joe, for helping to clarify the details with the history of the boat.  I love hearing about this, and I’ll keep notes!

For everyone else out there, Joe told me: I purchased the boat from John Johnstone (Rod’s brother) in the spring of 1994. It was built in the fall of 1992 and shipped to the Irish Boat Shop in Harbor Springs, MI, where it spent the next year in Dave Irish’s showroom. John Johnstone at that time was a J Boats dealer, and he arranged for the boat to be shipped to a yard in Barrington, RI where I had it commissioned (and where the head was installed). For the next 8 years my boat (Acrobat) was moored in Marion, MA where it was used for daysailing, camp cruising, and minimal racing.

This was really funny and amazing to me, since the boat is now back in Michigan, just a short drive from where she started out in Dave Irish’s showroom!  Full circle.

Here’s the article https://mailchi.mp/jboats/jnewsletter-july-11th-1951585?e=7dc56ff7c8  (down in the J/Community section)
We’ll be posting it at Quantum Sails soon too, with some new edits.

Love your sense of humor, Bob J.  Great graphics on the new kite!
